Not a bad start by the Windies. Terrible sweep by the debutant though. I’ve long believed that you are either a sweeper or not. True sweepers don’t miss straight ones on middle. The only player I can think of who made himself into a sweeper is Matt Hayden. I think the makeup of the attacks isn’t much of an issue here. WI have Chase and England Stokes to level out the attacks with pace and spin. and it does look like later on, straight bowling of any discipline will reap rewards. Quite low and slow..... Track playing flat, 350 plus would at the moment be a minimum. This is looking like a test match that will not reveal much till day 3 I think. Unless the Windies or England implode whilst batting - both capable of it!

First Test, Kensington Oval, Barbados (day one) West Indies 264-8: Hope 57, Hetmyer 56*, Chase 54; Anderson 4-33
England: Yet to bat
Great fight back by England in the final session, unsurprisingly the new ball was key and unsurprisingly Anderson was the man to utilise to the max. Even before his wickets he was going at just 1.3 an over all day, he simply is irreplaceable to England. Great captaincy by Root to whip Curran out the new ball attack early and unleash Stokes with the new cherry.
I really liked Hetmyer's attitude, he isn't one to die wondering!

Good entertainment from Dickwella, hitting out for 64, but this one will be a slaughter. I can't see this attack rolling Australia defending such a paltry total.

England are a shambles. Root just doesn't cut it as a captain.

England are a shambles. Root just doesn't cut it as a captain. Just woke up after a good 8 hour sleep. This is beyond my belief
I know you will laugh on me and you will be totally justified but I still can't trust West Indies. They need to win first.
But I need to see the highlights now. Roach must have been brilliant!

Saw the highlights of WI v Eng - some very good bowling from both sides. Kemar Roach - he good go down as arguably the most underperformed talent of the last 25 years. Remember when he tormented Ricky Ponting ? 163 wickets at 28 in 42 Tests. I thought he’d have a superior record than that, and by now he’d be the lynchpin the Windies really need.

Harris goes in the first over for 44. Man always looks good, but refuses to secure his spot with a hundred. With a nightwatchman in, could be a little opening for the Lankans here.

4/86 now, Labuschagne and Head both on 0*
Hosko is 100% correct about Harris. He did the hard bit, survived under the lights, looked good again and then slapped a shit ball with a shit shot to point.....😡😡😡

Really not unexpected, I have been banging on for a long time that England are prone to collapse because the top order is so fragile. So often England find themselves 50 odd for 4 but the middle and lower order bail them out, it just can't happen all the time - as evidenced in Auckland last year. Put the fragile batters up against a very useful pace attack and you got problems, and boy did they bowl well. The omission of Broad for an extra spinner now looks a calamity of a decision!! England simply have not found replacements for Cook and Strauss and the number 3 position is a poisoned chalice. The bowlers have kept them in it - just - but it's most unlikely that this batting line up could chase more than 300 against fast bowlers on a quirky pitch.
Good for the Test Match scene though and a kick up the arse for England.

He has greatly improved as a captain, he's probably culpable in the bizarre selection cock-up for this match, but the blame for the collapse is hardly his fault. Again it should be noted that he often comes in with England 3 down for not very many runs, he isn't going to make big innings to bail them out all the time.
