The old Jay Ward "Fractured Fairy Tales" had an episode where at the end Edward Everett Horton said, "Laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone." Does anybody know which one this comes from?

Yes, that is the original poem that it paraphrased. I discovered that decades after I saw the cartoon.

Just curious, but why the interest in this one line in this specific location ? It is a quotation from a poem and has been used in many places. It's interesting to me to see the things that get asked on INtK and it's sometimes great to learn the origin of the requests. One guy was looking for a particular scene in a movie to find an image of his grandfather. "We" found it ! geode

They often did more than one parody of a fairy tale. I know there is more than one for "Snow White". The end of this particular "Rapunzel" spoof went like this: the narrator says "Laugh, and the whole world laughs with you" and they cut to a shot of the Witch on her broom, cackling. Then they show the Prince flying around the now empty tower and the narrator says "Fly, and you fly alone." I think that's one of the few FFTs that has a sad ending.

"We" found it ! geode It was my first encounter with that particular part of the poem, most likely 55 years ago or so. I probably saw it a couple of times after that and can still hear the intonation of Edward Everett Horton saying it. It was an uncharacteristic "downer" ending for a cartoon as most in this series ended with something humorous. It has come to mind the past few days as against my better judgement I referred to a number of problems I am having in an ongoing depression on my Facebook page....with nobody responding. There are memes about this amount of response on FB when one complains that I have seen, that sort of make the same point point as the poem.

geodeI hope that you are successful in your quest. More difficult inquiries than this have been solved ! Btw, EEH is a hoot. I was at a taping of a interview show and what he said during the breaks was really great.

Narrated by Hans Conreid.....
Laugh and the World with You, Croak and You Croak Alone, or A Boing in the Hand is Worth Two in the Bush.
