Saw it last Saturday and I was enthralled. For anyone who enjoys "true-story" history compellingly told, with plenty of pathos, I highly recommend it. I foresee Oscar nominations for: Best Picture Best Director - Stephen Frears (who also helmed the wonderful Florence Foster Jenkins) Best Actress - Judi Dench Best Actor - Ali Fazal * Best Cinematography Best Costumes Best Screenplay based on another source (or whatever you call it when it's not original) It's also very touching, so be sure to bring plenty of Kleenex. *I happen to be a happily married woman, but Mr. Fazal is very easy on the eyes.

Well I recently watched The Young Victoria again, so I'm in the mood to see the newest one. It sounds promising.

Yes, they showed the trailer for this when we went to see 'Hampstead'. I remember thinking it looked like a good film to see.

This looks sooo stupid.. Don't expect anything original, don't expect any decent writing... So, in other words, it'll probably sell a lot.

Oscar Bait: The Movie. And for the record, there's nothing wrong with liking this kind of film, but to me it's every bit as tired and formulaic as the popcorn flicks the art house crowd are always complaining about.

Seems like ALL the movies in the last 30 years have been like this..... Just a business, and they still lose money.

Victoria & Abdul “Based On The Amazing True Story.” Judi Dench returns to the role of Queen Victoria and, as happens in “Mrs. Brown” (1997), also with Dench as Victoria, she becomes friends with a commoner (this time from India, last time from Scotland) which upsets all her government advisors and handlers. Does Dame Judi really need the money that badly that she agrees to a virtual remake of an older film of hers? A big disappointment from one of stage and screens greatest actors. Maybe, like Laurence Olivier before her, she is going to take just about any project offered this late in her life in order to leave a monetary legacy to her heirs.
My prediction: No nominations. No box office business. A vanishing into the void of forgotten bad movies.

First there was Mrs. Brown. Now Victoria and Abdul. Why not just have Judi Dench star in a sitcom about Queen Victoria and all her guys? It would at least be more fun than these stodgy "Oscar bait" movies.
