Week 7 Winners and Losers
Winners
Chiefs - They lost Thursday night but at 5-2 they obviously remain winners, and they actually played very well. Smith with lots of yards and precision, their secondary harassing the receivers, their offensive line forcing Carr to make very fast moves that resulted in dropped passes... but then they played against a Carr on fire, and they did screw up with all the penalties in the last drive. But still, that was a great game and they have lost two now but they are a fabulous team that is entertaining to watch.
Saints - After a disastrous start in the first two weeks, the Saints are now actually leading the NFC South. The Bucs are horrible, the Panthers are struggling more and more, and Atlanta has shown vulnerability and inconsistency, not to forget that they laid an egg on Sunday... so it seems like the Saints might be able to take the division, after all. Now at 4-2 and enjoying a 4-game winning streak, I'm ready to give them some credit.
Vikings - Now at 5-2, they are in firm control of the division even though they struggled a bit in first half on Sunday. With the Packers in decline, things look good for the Vikings.
Rams - Won another one and at 5-2 they are getting a firmer grip on the division. Meanwhile their only competition, the Seahawks, also won on Sunday but against a pretty bad team. The Rams were already members of the Winners last week, although I called it provisional, so with one more win they make the winners list with more certainty.
Steelers - Getting more solid, with another good win after they beat the Chiefs last week. They remain as winners.
Patriots - The early hiccups are now all but forgotten, as they move to 5-2 and continue to count on the excellent services of the GOAT.
Seahawks - Remain in the mix with another win today, fighting with the Rams for divisional supremacy but well-positioned for a wild card spot at least. I had them as more evidence needed but another poster convinced me that for now they are winners.
Eagles - Continue to impress with the best winning record in the league
Losers
Browns - 0-7, enough said. The joke of the NFL. They should change their name to Cleveland Clowns.
Niners - so much for the notion that they were only losing close games by 3 points or less... got routed today. Definitely losers.
Giants - managed to win one last week, lost again this week. This team is terrible, and made even worse by injuries.
Bengals - lost an important divisional battle today and confirmed the poor impression of the start of the season which had been mitigated by a couple of wins. But no, they're still losers.
Panthers - I'm moving them to losers, from their previous position of More Evidence. Their offense was putrid today in Chicago, and the Bears are not that good. The division is moving away from them, with the Saints actually taking the lead (and they already have a victory over the Panthers, for tie-breakers). I'm starting to feel that the Panthers will not make the playoffs, since the competition in the rest of the conference is improving too.
Bears - still with a losing record, in spite of a couple of good wins. The problem is, I found their win today unimpressive - the 14-point lead came out of two defensive plays that were ultimately quite lucky. Take that away and the game was tied. I'm not ready yet to move the Bears out of the losers list; besides, they still sit last in their division.
Bucs - at 2-4 and last in the NFC South, definitely losers.
Jets - I finally gave them some credit last week and moved them from losers to more evidence... then they lost again. Being now the only team with a losing record in the AFC East, their season is darkening more and more. Yes, they are better than the 0-16 team some were expecting, but their improvement won't take them anywhere.
Packers - Doomed without Rodgers, lost at home today, and the Vikings won; the latter are running away with the division. The Packers will lose more games without Rodgers and their season seems bust.
Ravens - Another team in trouble and going down hill, lost again in week 7, were already members of the Losers list last week, remain so.
Colts - Poor Colts, LOL. Got shut out today. 2 and 5, oh my. At one point it looked like they'd survive the absence of Luck... but then they didn't, and the doctors said Luck will be out longer than expected; got some practice, the pain returned. Not good. The Colts are doomed and there is no coming back.
Cardinals - They are also turning into a major embarrassment. 33-0, really? And now they lost their QB too, not that he's been any good, but still...
Broncos - They got clobbered by the Chargers who aren't that good. Two losses in a row to the two previous 0-4 teams, it doesn't look good. Even though at 3-3 they might qualify for more evidence being needed, I'll just go with my gut and place them as losers.
Falcons - I'm ready to place the Falcons among the losers. They laid an egg in Foxboro, and they've won some close games that they should have lost, which would have made of their record, a badly losing one. The truth is that they are sloppy, make too many mistakes, commit too many penalties, and are just overall very vulnerable. I think as the season goes on, they'll be more and more exposed. So I'm going out on a limb and already calling them losers.
More evidence is needed
Raiders - After Carr shook off the rust last game, he was phenomenal on Thursday night with more than 400 yards. Still, the team made too many mistakes, missed field goals, stupid penalties (including a boneheaded move by Lynch), dropped passes, and they still have a losing record at 3-4, so we can't call them winners yet even though their star QB is back. There seems to be something off with the Raiders in spite of all the talent. Certainly without Carr carrying them on his back they are nothing. So, it remains to be seen; they can make the playoffs or can crash and burn.
Titans - They were already part of the More Evidence list last week given their inconsistency, and needing overtime to finally beat the Browns isn't reassuring. Besides, the Jaguars also won, and Houston got a bye, so the division remains way open; therefore by definition we need to keep monitoring this team to see where they'll go. Might make the playoffs, or not. More evidence is definitely needed.
Dolphins - The Fins now have four wins, who would have thought? They are actually at least provisionally, tied with the Pats and the Bills for first place in their division. They got already moved to this list last week after beating the Falcons on the road. I still don't feel confident about them to move them to winners. We'll see what they do next.
Jaguars - they continued the pattern: W/L/W/L/W/L/W so they are due for a loss next game. Therefore the craziest rollercoaster of a team in the league will have to remain as More Evidence until they break this pattern in some direction.
Bills - The Dolphins caught up with them; if the Patriots beat the Falcons tonight, the Bills prospects for the playoffs get murky since they'd be disputing with the Dolphins and others for the Wild Card spot. So, more evidence is needed.
Chargers - Three wins in a row, are they starting a resurgence? I guess we'll need to start watching them, and should give them some credit, moving them from losers to more evidence, even though they are still 3-4. They impress me more than some 3-3 teams like the Broncos.
Cowboys - So now the Cowboys are 3-3. Can they save their season? I don't know, which is why they are here. Besides, we don't know what will happen to them once Zeke's suspension kicks in.
Redskins - Now at 3-3 in a tough situation, with the Eagles running away with the division, and the Cowboys tied with them at 3-3, we don't know if the Redskins are headed to the playoffs or not, so almost by definition, more evidence is needed.
