When I first read the ending to "Hannibal", by Thomas Harris, I was disgusted. I don't want to spoil it, just in case you haven't gotten around to reading it, but over the years I began to appreciate what Thomas Harris did.
He was asked in an interview once about the ending, and his reply was, "Is the ending fair to you, or is it fair to the characters?"
Rumor has it that Jodie Foster had a real problem with the ending of the book as well. She also wanted a lot of money to reprise the role.
In my opinion, it would have been money well spent because Julianne Moore will never be Clarice to me.

I'm glad they changed it. The book sucked. It would have been better had they trashed his book and just made their own continuation.
Honestly, Harris is a pretty shitty author. Red Dragon was lightening in a bottle and it's awesome. Silence is basically a reworking of Red Dragon, but it became popular because it was the first successful adaptation.
Everything else he wrote is crap.
Oh, and Julianne Moore is more like how I imagined Clarice when I first read SOTL....

I agree that Hannibal was bad, but I find my opinion softening just a tad over the years. I didn't even remember what the OP meant until I thought about it. I think that part was awful, and I'm not sure what he was going for. As you say, Red Dragon was awesome, and had one of the most sympathetic villains I've ever read. Silence was an OK read, and I still am in awe of the Chilton/bilirubin thing. I did enjoy Black Sunday too, though can't remember much about it now. Other than I wanted the bad guy to get away with it (so, basically, just like any episode of Columbo).

Well, you raise two points: 1) The ending of the movie vs that in the book; and, 2) The comparison of Foster vs Moore. Firstly, I wish the movie had kept the book's ending which I thought was uniquely horrifying and therefore satisfying. I think the movie ending a typical Hollywood copout. Secondly, I wished Foster had been able and willing to agree to be Starling a second time. I missed her. But, I was able to overlook that loss since Moore did a competent, believable job in the movie.

Yet, to paraphrase Harris, that was probably more true to the characters than his own writings.
