"You have the right to remain silent... Forever!""To protect and Serve". A slogan that should make the citizens of New York city feel safe, whenever the boys in blue are near by. But when a crazed lunatic decides to dress up as an officer of the law, only to go out at night and slaughter innocent people, it ends up putting the whole town into a complete chaos. And to make matters worse, two of NYPD's very own finest suddenly find themselves being the wrongly accused targets in a fierce witch hunt. One of my favorite horror/action trilogies, the Maniac Cop series written by Larry Cohen and directed by Will Lustig/Joel Soisson combines a bit of Magnum Force (1973) along with the more usual slasher genre of the 80s, and it does work rather well. All three films gather along an pretty damn impressive cast which features the likes of Tom Atkins, Robert Davi, Bruce Campbell, Laurene Landon, Richard Roundtree, Michael Lerner, Paula Trickey, Danny Trejo, Sam Raimi, Charles Napier, Paul Gleason, Robert Forster and of course Robert Z'Dar as officer Matt Cordell. Of the three films, and while the first one is probably the best one, the second has always felt a bit too "rushed" for my part and I did not like how they treated the two main characters from the first one, but I was more than glad to see Robert Davi in one of his rare appearances as the hero, Sean McKinney. A wise cracking but street tough, no nonsense detective, that I felt did his best work in the third film, Badge of Silence, which is also my favorite of the series.

Love those movies. They're quite underrated. Matt Cordell is an awesome villain and the fact that we have horror favorites like Bruce Campbell and Tom Atkins makes them even better. Too bad Robert Z' Dar passed away recently, I would have loved a part 4.

A fourth film would have been great back in the mid 90s, but then again I kind of liked how it ended with third one. I see that for some time now, at least according to the Wikipedia page, it says: A remake directed by John Hyams and produced by Nicolas Winding Refn was announced in 2015 and scheduled for a 2017 release.
If a remake is in the happening, I really would like to see a much more bigger picture of the life of officer Matt Cordell, before he became Maniac Cop. Of course the main worry for me, and probably most Maniac Cop fans, is who's gonna take on the role after Robert Z' Dar?

1. Best tagline in history 2. Great villain 3. Can't even remember if I've only seen the first two or all three 4. Why are blurays of horror movies often so expensive?

I liked 1 and 2. 3 was unnecessary.

Sorry about the bump but I just thought I should mention that the "upcoming" remake seems to "have the right to remain silent... Forever!" or at least according to Larry Cohen, several months back. Maybe its for the best. I would probably still see it, if a new Maniac Cop movie was to be made, however the move away from the horror tone of the original films to a contemporary and realistic action thriller settings/plot, that could work but also it could end up as just another highly forgettable and completely unnecessary remake of a cult horror film.

Maniac Cop 2017 would have definitely been one of the more interesting remakes since I think the original had a lot of unrealized potential. It's not a bad movie, I even have it on Blu-ray, but there's much more that could be done with the concept than what the original trilogy did. I agree with you stefancrosscoe that remaking it as a more realistic action/thriller would have been a wise move. I've never been the biggest fan of how the trilogy got increasingly supernatural. Would love the see the director's cut of Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence though.

Maniac Cop: Good action/horror thriller, with subtle hints on possible supernatural activity. Creepy atmosphere and stylish direction by William Lustig. Robert Z'dar is perfect as Matt Cordell. My one complaint is that the ending seemed to be a bit rushed.
Maniac Cop 2: Surprisingly good sequel that measures up to the first. Superior action scenes, especially the now-famous police station massacre sequence.
Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence: Meh, didn't really care for it. No wonder Lustig and Cohen quit on it.
I have no interest in seeing a remake.

It'll happen, eventually. Everything happens eventually in Hollywood - e.g. the long-delayed Meg movie.
