I don't see the point of claiming whether a review is biased or unbiased or not, as if it makes a point of view any more or less valid. It only matters if the person has a personal stake in the film.
So for the record, I love CBM films, and think the MCU has so far managed to consistently transfer them to screen better than other studios. If in some peoples opinion that makes me biased
Ragnarok is a lighthearted movie comparable to GOTG and for me not a bad thing. It's what I was hoping for. I wanted, and was expecting, a light hearted, gag full movie, the trailers and choice of director had indicated it would be that, and I wasn't disappointed. Now is that taking centre stage over "emotional resonance" a bad thing? For me no....I wanted to sit in front of a big screen and just be entertained for two hours, and I was.
The film looks great...as a comic fan it was good to see Kirby comics transferred on to the big screen so well. DEVO's Mark Mothersbaugh's sometimes synth heavy score fits perfectly, and the couple of times existing music is used (Led Zep twice and Willy Wonka) perfectly, compared to say Suicide Squad, where songs it seemed were used to sell a soundtrack rather than compliment the film.
Much has been made of the onscreen partnership between Thor & Hulk which is entertaining...but Thor has 3 pairings in the film, with Hulk, Loki and Tess Thompson's Valkyrie - all great.
Jeff Goldblum gives us the slightly odd performance we want to see from him (the endearing oddness we get when we see him on chat shows); a, for me at times unrecognisable, Cate Blanchett as Hela is a decent villain and pretty sexy to boot; Karl Urban adds another decent performance to a CV of decent CBM performances; Taika Waititi's Korg is an adorable scene stealing revolutionary rock creature. But amongst all the talent on screen Tessa Thompson is the real stand out. Have not seen her in anything before, but the moment she appears I was won over. Valkyrie is a strong and sexy character I almost missed when she wasn't on screen - she has to get a screen outing of her own (kudos also to Thompson and Urban for puling off decent British accents).
Now, back to the gags. A complaint for some, but personally, beyond the verbal sparring, I actually enjoyed the toilet humour, prat falls and slapstick, especially in the context of a world of gods and superhumans.
I have a lot of time for dark and deep CBM movies - Logan, Dark Knight films etc, but that is not what I wanted from this film and I don't think it was needed. Just before Thor the JL trailer was shown - it seems a lighter DC film, but it was like someone had switched the lights on between the two - JL looks so serious and dark (again) in comparison. I like that Marvel can switch tones (not to an extreme degree) between films.
Is it better than the other CBMs this year? Better than Logan? - not sure, certainly more enjoyable. Better than SM:H? - possibly. Better than Wonder Woman? - easily. Credit to Marvel for making Thor, a character with two less than stellar instalments under it's belt, one of its best. As a CBM fan that likes MCU films (NOT an "MCU Fanboy") Ragnarok more than satisfied. At least 8/10
I know this is more lie a list of bullet points than a review, not good at reviews. Sorry
