He told sheriff Brakett that he was 3 blocks down from his company car when she was banging on everybody's front door?

He may have initially wandered several streets in the wrong direction and been just out of earshot at that point. Within a few minutes of course, he is on the scene to witness the terrified kids fleeing the Doyle house, so you do have a point that he can't have been too far away to begin with

I was going to say maybe he assumed it was just kids goofing around, but that isn't Loomis' style. He would have investigated.
Maybe he was in a washroom? Would he be the type to go behind the bushes or knock on a door and ask to use facilities? I tend to think the latter.

Perhaps he did hear her screaming but couldn't tell where it was coming from. Only when he saw the kids come running out did he know he was in the right place. Too bad our old "expert" isn't around to answer this question. He would have had a field day telling us how it nearly ruins the movie for him. I watched it yesterday and had a chuckle at the part where Brackett says the dog is still warm as well as the part where the laundry room door opens and shuts on Annie.

Thank you for the replies! Sorry I didn't see the other main thread here for Halloween 78 last night.

That's very plausible that he may have heard but could not determine where the screams were coming from before Laurie made it back inside. Yes - I've no doubt our ex-Chief Halloween Expert would have corrected us both and informed me that I have an explanation for everything! And indeed - I too can't help thinking about the dog bbq and magic (invisible) door-shutting rope when those related moments play out watching the movie!

I have no doubt he would have said you have an explination for everything, damned me for backing you up, and chalked it up as another flub.

That's because according to our old "expert" , Michael must have also taken a cobos grill, charcoal and lighter fluid from that hardware store break in to cook that dog .
