The GOTG franchise is pretty dark for comedies when you think about it. To be fair, action comedies tend to be able to get away with darker moments a lot easier. And James Gunn knows how direct the darker moments and the comedic moments.

Thor 3 has good action scenes, and was better than Guardians 2 and Spider-Man.

I liked the anti-colonialism themes in the story. Hela represented the old ways of conquest that Asgard once embraced, Thor started off the same way but his character development means he'd changed since then. The people of Asgard would rather die than go back to those older ways, and this is symbolized by Thor deliberately destroying Asgard to eliminate Hela.
He and the people will make a new home elsewhere, one that doesn't have to be built on conquest and death to make something.

I wasn't quite sure about it at first, but after once they introduced Hela, things picked up and I was in love by the end. Its radically different from both previous Thor film, but in a good way. The humor was spot on, and always welcome, the action was great, the characters were nicely fleshed out, and loved how everything just came full circle at the end. Everyone in the cast brought their very best, but special attention has to go to Jeff, who got his best Goldblum on. I'm definitely going to be seeing this again. My favorite bits are all the character threads and plot points that continue to deeply develop this entire universe in a way that makes it feel more and more alive. The character development for many characters was unexplained and just happened to occur. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie but I didn't feel the character treads and plot points developed, I felt they were wedged in.

Hulk for instance makes tons of sense and is really deep. The fact that Banner is scared after waking up to realize his personality was gone for 2 years. That's incredible, just think about it. Valkerie having watched her legion destroyed and flat out giving up on life, only to be restored by Thor and Banner. Thor making the decision to sacrifice his homeland to save his people. This stuff was rich.

So looking at all indicators, Marvel's got another winner in Thor: Ragnarok. Its getting kind of scary how a studio can just knock it out of the ballpark every time.

Thor is probably my favorite MCU movie this year. I really enjoyed Spiderman: HC but like [@weirdraptor said, after Hela shows up this movie just gets so damn good. I was pretty meh on the Doctor Strange cameo and the first 15 minutes seemed kinda choppy but other than that Ragnarok is a blast and probably on my top 5 MCU movies.

Honestly I loved it's not a perfect movie and at certain points they could've dialed down the humor but the plot, emotion, acting and character development was all solid and this was by far the best Thor film.
Better than Wonder Woman, Homecoming and GOTG 2. Not as good as Logan. For me this movie truly felt like Marvel was back because despite my really liking GOTG2, Doctor Strange and Homecoming those movie really felt repetitive with the humor. Ragnarok had humor but it felt fresh and mostly well timed. I can understand fans of the Norse mythology getting pissed it wasn't serious but as Thor film it's really good.
9/10

This stuff was rich. How was Valkyrie's character properly developed. We were introduced to her history in a 30 second flashback. We are meant to assume from that, that she was some life loving, honourable and noble warrior, only to have it all dashed because her legion was destroyed, turning her into a drunken "bounty hunter"? Your opinion is certainly different to mine but that isn't what I would call well developed, I'd call it rushed. We've had two previous movies where the Valkyrie legend could have been fleshed out in a back story and would have made the characterisation better and more developed. And as for Hulk, Banner became some sort of court jester and Hulk developed the power of speech and sarcasm!! I enjoyed the film but I wouldn't try and pretend that their characters were developed. Their attitudes may be somewhat understandable but only if you make a few assumptions due to lack of backstory.

I'm not pretending there were some long character studies going on here, and there didn't need to be. Banner has a lot of really deep subtext to his current state, and Valkerie was sufficiently set up. It's not rushed because there didn't need to be any more than that. If you're looking for a character study film there are Guardians 2 and Thor 1 for example. This wasn't those.

By that I take it you mean the previous movies. I will grant that he has been devolved in those movies, but his current jester attitude doesn't reflect the history. Hulk's newfound intelligence comes out of nowhere, and Thor doesn't bat an eyelid that he can now converse with him and that Hulk has developed the intelligence to have a sarcastic streak. Valkerie was sufficiently set up
If you think a 30 second flashback is sufficient set up then I have to disagree. I felt no empathy for her losses and she wasn't a character I was involved enough with to care about at any stage of the film. The less said about the character development of Skurge, the better. I'm still trying to fathom what it was exactly he brought to the film.

It was because he was stuck in Hulk mode for 2 years continuously, I thought that was obvious. Thor has little issue with it because he's also having conversations with talking rock men. He was the lowborn son of common Asgardians who just wanted some recognition and respect. He chose Hela because he didn't want to die and because she noticed him, but then realized what serving her would entail and then finally realized that being an Asgardian warrior wasn't about recognition, it was about doing the right thing and protecting people. He died for it, but he died a satisfied person.

My comment re Hulk and Thor has nothing to do with talking Rock Men, or aliens as they are, it is the fact that all the time Thor has known Hulk, pretty much the only conversation was "Hulk Smash". Now he's a real wisecracker! You forgot the cockney accent because that makes him so much more rounded!! And after that little biography on his life, what did he bring to the film? That was my question.

Now he's a real wisecracker! Thor has spoken to plenty of beings like Hulk who can talk. He probably thought "Huh, now you can talk to like all the others I've met. Was wondering when it would happen..." A little mini-arc given for a side character who'd usually just be disposed of with little to no fanfare. Here they bothered giving him some character.

Sorry but that is lame. A being that morphs into an unintelligent beast suddenly develops intelligence. We are talking about character development, and you class development as "Huh, now you can talk to like all the others I've met. Was wondering when it would happen..." That's not character development. A little mini-arc given for a side character who'd usually just be disposed of with little to no fanfare. Here they bothered giving him some character.
They gave him no character. They gave him a cockney accent, was that supposed to mean he was from lower class?? His presence added nothing.
