Spoilery spoilers included. Beware...
Short version: Acky likey.
Long version: Definately the best MCU movie since Civil War. I was very unimpressed with GotG 2 and the Spidey reboot. This however is one I'm excited to add to my CBM collection. It's still second to Logan though for this year's number one. But it does beat WW.
I was definately relieved when I found myself enjoying the humor. I was really worried it would be the GotG low brow stuff... Well, some of it was. But mostly it was well written and well timed. Thor was hilarious. Hemsworth has excellent delivery. And I think the silliness suits the character without degrading him. It's a nice balance.
There were a few times though when the jokes fell flat for me. I didn't find that rock alien funny at all. The Ragnorak demon was a bit too goofy. And that shake weight joke was cringe worthy. And there were plenty of moments where they just tried too hard to get laugh after laugh. But the humor worked most of the time, especially with Thor. And what's really great is that they didn't feel the need to cheapen some of the more poignant moments with Loki and Oden.
Led Zeppelin rules! Loved Immigrant Song during the opening and the climax.
Goldblum was awesome. Who wouldn't want to be greeted daily by a giant holographic Goldblum? I know I would!
Hulk was a bit annoying honestly. Too juvenile. Props to Marvel though for showing his big green ass. Didn't expect that.
Banner was gold. Ruffalo owns the role.
Loki was better than ever.
Hela was... Good, I guess. Cate gave a solid, if not hammy, performance. The revelation of her being Thor's sister was a neat surprise. It's a nice poetic touch. Thor must fight his brother, then later, his sister.
Sacar was a surprisingly interesting place. It felt lived in and had some depth. Quite unlike the bland generic locals of the GotG movies.
Its a bit odd that Ragnorak was merely a red herring, and then, surprisingly, a weapon against Hela. But it worked. I don't have any attachment to Thor's mythos, so I was cool with it.
I could go on but I'll leave it here. I loved the tone. Loved the character for the first time ever. And had a blast. Yet, it wasn't merely one of those fun blockbusters that fades with time. It felt like a genuine creative achievement. A solid 8/10!
Feel free to comment and discuss. I'll be sure to- Wait...
Ive been banned again?! Oh for fuck sake!

I more or less 100% agree with your post. We need more movies where Jeff Goldblum kills people with a magic stick!

Dr Strange has been one I love rewatching, and GOTG2 was an amazingly good character piece. Spidey did so good with that street level vibe as well. And Thor just went full on cosmic and it was spectacular. Love all this shit.

My biggest complaint was that Grandmaster didn't have ANY powers at all in this. In the comics, the guy is more powerful than Xavier and Magneto combined.

My biggest complaint was that Grandmaster didn't have ANY powers at all in this. In the comics, the guy is more powerful than Xavier and Magneto combined. Well he is an immortal... Yes...but even the movie seemed to imply his long life was due to Sakarr's weird time-wimey stuff. I understand WHY he didn't show any power: In the original Planet Hulk storyline the ruler of Sakaar was this random jerk called the Red King...who had no powers. Since they gave Red King's role to Grandmaster, the story wouldn't work if he DID have his powers because then there's no way the rebellion would've done a thing and odds are Thor and Hulk never would've escaped. Since they seem to be planning on bringing Goldblum back for other stories, maybe he'll reveal he does have powers (the interviews and the official guides all mention that he has them) in another story and he was just messing around in Ragnarok. It's the same with the Collector, he has all kinds of powers in the comics too but he didn't do anything in GOTG (admittedly, he didn't have time to do much and wouldn't have been able to stop the Power Stone's energies anyways).

Innit? Like I said, I understand he couldn't have powers because the Red King had no powers. But I'm willing to give MCU the benefit of the doubt because Goldblum said he had powers.

You're ashamed of comics? Nah, I wished he'd had his powers. But the MCU has done so well so often that I'm willing to swallow the few bitter pills we get. I'm not that fanatical.

But I'm willing to give MCU the benefit of the doubt because Goldblum said he had powers. He might have powers. And I don't think the concept of the Red King prevents him from having powers in any way.
We really don't know how the Elders work yet.
There's actually an interesting theory out there that they are celestials, and that's why they're constantly referenced with them. Ego calls himself a celestial and looks like the Gardener. Grandmaster has celestial body guards all around him. The collector lives inside the head of one, which might actually be his own head when he was in that form.

Yeah I agree for sure. I'm curious if there is anything deeper going on with those guys.
