It had heart. And it's a shame we never got a sequel. It's not too late, WB! Still 76% on RT, too. I loved it. Haven't seen it in years.

It's not that it was badly made, it was just boring. In a time where we had pretty action packed superhero movies like Spider-man and X-men, Superman Returns didn't have that much action really.
It was kinda slow and he never even got to fight anybody which is kinda what people wanted to see considering the technology that was available by then.
But yeah it wasn't so bad.

it had some decent scenes but it felt lifeless, bloodless and bland most of the time. Snyder's MOS is far more exiting, interesting and fresh. IMO

For a long time, I daydreamed about a Routh / Reynolds / Bale "Justice League" film.
Oh well.

To me, the 1st thing that Singer got wrong with Superman Returns was not making a Superman movie. He made a Richard Donner movie.

It was the only film I've seen in theaters that put me to sleep. It was more boring than terrible.

Not as good as WW but I enjoyed the film. The cast had great chemistry and I enjoyed the scene on Themyscira. One of the many complaints I have heard had to do with the villain and the cgi. The villain wasn't as bad as the critics made it out to be. I agree with the cgi though. It could of been done way better. 8/10.
I did like Superman's return, not so much in the beginning but after he finished doing some soul searching and returned to form it got better. Great scenes with Superman and Steppenwolf.

I think the thread is about the Bryan Singer movie Superman Returns.

I can't say I disagree with this point of view. I also feel Kate Bosworth was totally miscast as Lois Lane, not only was she too young but also didn't really have much chemistry with Brandon Routh. Now, Parker Posey would've made a terrific Lois, how they didn't realize this when they were casting the movie I'll never know.

Is that the one where Kevin Spacey sexually harasses Superman?
Too soon?

Cavill was out-acted by his lip in most of the scenes. In fact, if someone told me that his lip was real and they had CGI'd the rest of him, I wouldn't have any problem believing them.

Ummm you have it backwards. Man of Rehash sucked because it utterly FAILED to correct ANY of the issues people had with Superman Returns. Instead, it just REPLICATED as MAGNIFIED them:
Superman Returns: Wayyyyyyyy too serious and somber, lacked any warmth, humor or fun uplifting spirit. Man of Rehash: Wayyyyyyyy too serious and somber, lacked any warmth, humor or fun uplifting spirit X 10
Superman Returns: Boring, predictable plot that just rehashes the storyline of the Donner movies, because the film wanted to be a homage. Man of Rehash: Boring, predictable plot that just rehashes the storyline of the Donner movies, because David Goyer is a no-talent hack that doesn't understand the whole point of a reboot is NOT to tell the same freakin' story as the original.

Man of Rehash: Boring, predictable villain that just recycles the villain of the Donner movies, because David Goyer is a no-talent hack that doesn't understand the whole point of a reboot is NOT to reuse an iconic villain the audience has seen before.
Superman Returns: Lois Lane is badly miscast and has zero chemistry with Superman Man of Rehash: Lois Lane is badly miscast and has zero chemistry with Superman AND has numerous cringeworthy lines
Superman Returns: TONS of "action scenes", but (aside from the plane rescue scene) the action is not interesting or engaging. Man of Rehash: TONS of "action scenes", but the action is not interesting or engaging. Endless destruction porn.
Superman Returns: Obvious "Christ-like" imaginary that hits the audience of the head. Man of Rehash: EVEN MORE obvious "Christ-like" imaginary that hits the audience of the head EVEN HARDER.
Need I go on?

But that wasn't the biggest criticisms of Superman Returns (well the Christ imagery). It was mostly that Superman never throws a punch. He just lifts things. All the action scenes except maybe one is of him lifting something. And that one action scene was more of an inaction scene. In MoS he throws lots of punches. He even puts his fist on the ground before flying the first time. So he punches the Earth to fly.

onethreetwo Well, y'know, it's my favorite Superman picture other than the original, so--well, yes, I (for one) think it's not only "not so bad" but actually very good. Certainly superior to the execrable Man of Steel. I'm a bit bemused by the comments calling it "boring" and "slow," criticizing that Supes didn't fight a lot. Well, that's exactly the point, methinks. This is a story about--well, about the plot and characters. It cares about people and treats them as real human beings, not dummies to pad out a chapter or to participate in another interminable modern explosion or superhero fight. But, then, I'm not a big fan of modern comic-books, which seem to have got rid of the element of fun in its entirety.

Though I don't agree with Tristan's original comment on this, I do agree that Superman Returns and Man of Steel represent utter, diametrical antitheses of each other. I suppose the disagreement is about which kind of movie one prefers.
