But that wasn't the biggest criticisms of Superman Returns (well the Christ imagery). It was mostly that Superman never throws a punch. He just lifts things. All the action scenes except maybe one is of him lifting something. And that one action scene was more of an inaction scene. In MoS he throws lots of punches. He even puts his fist on the ground before flying the first time. So he punches the Earth to fly. Bull. Find me ONE negative review of Superman Returns from 2006 where the critic says "man, I LOVED the dour, bleak, humorless tone, but my MAIN complaint is that Superman should have been punching people!"The MAIN complaint about Superman Returns was that 1) It took itself WAY too seriously and lacked the fun and lighthearted tone of earlier Superman movies, 2) the plot/villian was a boring rehash of what we had already seen before, and 3) Lois Lane was badly miscast and had ZERO chemistry with Superman. You can look up any review from 2006 and find THOSE were the main complaints. NOT Superman needing to be punching people. Superman "never threw a punch" in the 1978 film either, and that film got overwhelmingly POSITIVE reviews. You MOS fanboys lying about why people didn't like Returns in 2006 won't change history. Maybe you and David Goyer would like to PRETEND people wanted destruction porn so Goyer's script "fixed" that and "gave audiences what they wanted", but all the history revisionism in the world won't make it true.

Shhh. Shame on you for citing the ACTUAL reasons Superman Returns got a "meh" response. We're supposed to PRETEND people didn't like it because Superman didn't beat up enough people. That way MOS fanboys can continue with their delusion that Goyer's crappy reboot "fixed" that "problem".

Dour, ultra serious, humorless, somber movie 2 is the "utter, diametrical antitheses" of Dour, ultra serious, humorless, somber movie 1... sure, makes sense! Drugs are bad, mmmmkay? Antitheses is the plural, dear boy-- antithesis the singular. Do try to keep up.

When I heard that "Superman Returns" was in the works, I had heard that the movie was supposed to have been a... "Get the Franchise Back On Track" ...Film.
When I saw the film, I felt that it accomplished what is set out to do... Sure, It did have some flaws.... But, I still I greatly enjoyed the film based on that premise.
Sadly most viewers expected more out of the film, for some reason, and so, it didn't perform as well as the Studio had hoped...
I was really looking forward to a "Superman Returns 2", because I believe the approach to the film would have been much different... The kind of film, that apparently audiences were expecting for "Superman Returns"...
I think it would have been on par with "Superman II" or even better.
Sadly, we will never know now.

But the tone wasn't called out. The main things that were said about Superman Returns was him only lifting things, stalking, and he didn't throw a punch. People didn't outright say "My main complaint..." It was just things said about the movie. For it to be a complaint it doesn't have to be in a review either. Oh and yeah, Lex Luthor was another complaint cause he did the same thing again. But at the same time the entire movie was a remake of Superman '78. Man of Steel fanboys? Ha! No.

I'm not particularly fond of the movie where Superman knocks up his girlfriend and then skips town for a few years.

I didn't like it.
Tonaly it felt off, didn't feel like Donner's films despite claiming to be, and suffered from Singer's dryness, I didn't like the color palette.

It had heart. And it's a shame we never got a sequel. It's not too late, WB! Still 76% on RT, too. 76%? OK, now this is proof that RT's formula must be wrong. Because there's no way that Superman Returns was better than MoS or JL.

It's not that it was badly made, it was just boring. In a time where we had pretty action packed superhero movies like Spider-man and X-men, Superman Returns didn't have that much action really. It was kinda slow and he never even got to fight anybody which is kinda what people wanted to see considering the technology that was available by then. But yeah it wasn't so bad. The only good action scene was the sequence when Superman landed the plane in the stadium. But Superman Returns was pretty bad.

it had some decent scenes but it felt lifeless, bloodless and bland most of the time. Snyder's MOS is far more exiting, interesting and fresh. IMO Agreed. I liked MoS better than Superman Returns.

Used to hate it when it came out. It's not terrible but still boring. Played out like Singer's personal fan-fic for the Donner era.

I really like how innocent and campy it can be, but it really drags.
It's definitely not bad, though.

IT 2017 was Ok Why is everyone obsessed with that movie? nostalgia? and people have this weird piggybacking mindset of saying "clowns are so scary" or "i'm terrified of clowns" because at most....... clowns are just annoying, but scary? they are not...... i mean it's not possible for everyone to have a phobia of clowns, some people do, but not everyone.

I hated it when it came out. I watched it again last year and enjoyed it a little more, but still. I'd probably rate it and Man of Steel about the same. They're both weak, just for opposite reasons (except Lois Lane, she sucks in both).

I'm honestly still not over Superman just bailing on Earth for like 5 plus years.
I get it, maybe Krypton had other survivors, but......then you add the kid angle?
I get the silent superman in MoS and BvS, since he's learning who he is and what his role is in the world......... but in Superman Returns? Are you telling me that the character has regressed? because he honestly lacks a personality, especially if he's meant to be Christopher Reeve's iteration.
And then you have Lex..... the portrayal does not match his stupid real estate scheme, this Lex feels vile, matching the tone of the movie, but then you attach that 1970's plan? Are you really that dumb?
Ahhhhh god, I know the movie isn't garbage, but it just gets me upset.
And Singer.... his movies besides Valkyrie and DoFP are so stale, no strong directorial stamp, not even a visual flair....just....dry.
