On DCEU we have Steppenwolf and Doomsday. MCU we have Hulk and Ultron. Which studio has the better CGI characters?

neither are great
Iron Man 1 had mixed practical effects with Stan Winston, all downhill after that

If they really spent $300 mill, why isn't the CGI better?
For one, I've always thought Marvel films only took off once CGI progressed to a point their heroes seemed real.
Cap's Shield in action is cool. Mjolnir is action is immensely satisfying. In Thor, it was so cool the first time he throws Mjolnir, it stops in mid-air, & returns to his hand. Thor fanservice as much as the Batwing over the moon in the 89 Batman. Fighting the Destroyer, Mjolnir deflecting the blast-straight out if the comics. In Dark World, Thor diving off the balcony, Mjolnir flying to his hand mid-air. Mjolnir desperately trying to return to Thor's hand, but he keeps falling through dimension holes so the poor thing veers off. In Ragnarok, Thor casually tossing Mjolnir in the air-so cool. The sounds it makes. Yeah!
Batman's toys are just toys. Mjolnir & Cap's Shield are characters, iconic pieces of the heroes' fighting arsenal. In Thor, when he sees Mjolnir for the first time in earth, it's the look of a man seeing an old friend.
Films have been faking Supes & Bats for years. It should be easy to make their films.

The answer to this question depends heavily on your definition of "good" CGI. Both companies have blemishes on their respective records for failures in this department. The most abysmal example of this being Zod and Superman's game of ping pong in the final act of Man of Steel. Dc does a better job of using CGI to create atmosphere while Marvel is better in the design and sound department. I think their approach works because they don't try to emulate real-world physics in any way shape or form. The look and sound of Thor's Hammer and Cap's shield in action are lifted right off of the page. The Hulkbuster, although obviously computer generated, was exceptionally well designed. Ultron was a let down because they tried and failed at giving him a plausibly expressive face, but; his sentry bots are superb because they are cold and expressionless. Steppenwolf looked worse than Ultron - I have no idea how that design got past an experienced VFX lead. The first three acts of MoS are beautiful from a VFX perspective - they're nearly flawless - except for the truck Zod or someone else threw.

I would also add the GOTG movies the spaceships, planets and space CGI are excellent and believable.
