Just rewatched Apocalypse Now for the first time since I was a kid. Watched the Redux version, which has almost an extra hour added back that was cut from the original theatrical release.
Damn, that is a good movie!
Is there any film that better captures the horror of modern warfare?

No. Because directors (well the ones in Hollywood anyway) aren't allowed to make movies like this anymore. I'll credit Gibson for coming close with Hacksaw Ridge.

I think Apocalypse Now (1979) is the best war themed movie with guns at this point (it's within my Top 58 movies). it's more psychological and mood/atmosphere based type of movie where as something like Saving Private Ryan (1998) i suspect has more mainstream appeal though even though i like Apocalypse Now (1979) more.
while i like both versions i tend to see the extended (redux) version in general when i re-watch the movie.
p.s. July 2015 is my most recent re-watch of this movie. which means ill be re-watching it sometime next year at the latest as a general guideline i re-watch all movies i score a 7/10 or higher (which are My Favorite Movies) at least once every few years or so.

Redux for me. I prefer its drawling pace & extras.

Great film. I have the Redux version. So many good scenes. One of my favs is the tiger scene and watching Chef crack up afterwards.

They sure as hell can't make a film with a live water buffalo sacrifice like that. Remember how crazy people got a couple of years ago when video was leaked from a set showing a terrified dog seemingly being forced to jump into water? (For that matter, I read that the only reason Coppola was able to film the scene was that it was done in the Philippines, where regulations governing animal use in films was much looser. The American Humane Association gave the film an "unacceptable" rating for animal cruelty.

My favorite scene is the one where Col Kurtz suprises Capt Willard with a "gift" that Kurtz has brought from Willard's boat. Willard is still tied up at that point and starts screaming his head off (well, not quite) at the horror of it.

As I was watching the film, I was thinking about the wiseacre who asked in this forum whether nudity is necessary in films. Apocalypse Now would have had a completely different feeling without all the boobs (those Playboy bunnies, and the French woman) and the naked remains of people who had been tortured to death hanging from trees and whatnot.

Apocalypse Now is an OK film. If you want the definitive Vietnam War movie, search out "We Were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson and Sam Elliot. This film is spot on...I know, being a vet...

One of my favorite all time films. I'm not a veteran but my uncle served in Vietnam.
My only wish is that a complete adaption of Heart of Darkness by Conrad would one day be filmed in all its horror.

It has to be one of the most overrated movies ever. There just isn't anything "good" about it, and it's incoherence is too contrived and Hollywood to be "art". It masquerades as something it definitely isn't.
1/10 for this mucked up movie called APOCALYPSE NOW

I saw it when I was 15 and left confused and sort of bored. Rewatched it in my late 20s and had a totally different experience. It's a tough movie, but a great watch. The Redux version is worth the extra hour.
I'm going to see it this weekend (currently in my mid 30s) at an indie theater that is screening it. Prepared to have a different reaction this time around. It reminds me of "Eraserhead" (of all things). Maybe not going to be your favorite movie, but worth and deserving of a watch.
Interesting and sort of twisted movie. I think it benefits from multiple viewings.

I found it boring and pretentious. The documentary on the making of it was more interesting but what assholes the filmmakers were--dangling a live pig as bait for a tiger, filming the stone-age tribe torturing pigs, all for a movie that is allegedly about how awful unnecessary violence is.

I don't remember that occurring in the movie.
Are you confusing this for when they kill a water buffalo?
According to a website: "The animal (a water buffalo, or carabao) was killed - but not for the film. The tribe in the film was a real indigenous tribe that lived in the area, and they had already decided to slaughter it. Coppola merely decided to film the event."
In the documentary Hearts of Darkness--I recall they observed them doing some weird ritual of sticking wooden rods into the hearts of pigs and the filmmakers started to record it (not for the movie, just because they were fascinated by it). Unless I am confusing it with another thing-I did see a documentary on the same tribe but I don't remember the stick thing in that.
