I've been getting re-obsessed with Death (the band) lately. Those last four albums are as good as any four-album run in metal history, and I especially think the last two are towering masterpieces. What a tragic loss the death of Chuck was... Ironically I have never been a huge death fan, cannibal corpse, deicide and autopsy are my favourites I think I dig Autopsy but never really got into CC or Deicide much. I think why Death stands out to me is their proggier elements. I just love those whiplash tempo changes, nutty drum fills, and even the bizarre fretless bass on several tracks. Plus, even though I generally don't care for lyrics in metal, Chuck was among the better lyricists, and I can actually understand them despite the harsh vocals.

I must confess that is one of the draw cards for Cannibal Corpse, I have never made out a single lyric. Metal lyrics are great when you are an angry teen, not so much in adulthood.

Being a fan of poetry I've rarely had any interest in lyrics regardless of genre or songwriter (barring a handful of exceptions like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen), but Schuldiner can at least write lyrics that sound like they were written by and for adults:

Solo or group. Pick up to 6. Kings, queens, your choice. Which six did YOU vote for?
Also WHY isn't Yes in this poll?!

I will post my review of the Cannibal Corpse show from NYC when I get home tomorrow night. Not sure how this thread started to go death metal though. But The ones I picked are not necessarily my favorites, but you have to put up there the beatles, the stones, elvis, etc...

And he was basically writing pretty non-standard metal lyrics like that from Spiritual Healing onward. By the time he got to The Sound of Perseverance, which is probably the most aptly named album ever given how almost every song is about dealing with pain or the evils of the world in general, his vocals just seemed to perfectly fit the lyrics. When he shrieks a line like "If you doubt what i say, I will make you believe," it's damn convincing!

My favorite is "A Pathetic.....excuse....for a human being!"

I think that quite a few extreme metal bands have had have come out with back to back excellent albums. Neurosis, Opeth, Enslaved, Converge, Meshuggah. I had gone to a Decapitated show a week before they got arrested and they were incredibly tight too.

Absolutely, and you mentioned two of my favorites in Opeth and Meshuggah (Opeth is second only to Maiden on my personal list). Still, I can't immediately think of any where I'd definitively say "yeah, those are better than the Human/ITP/Symbolic/SOP quartet." Wow, I had no idea Decapitated were arrested! I just looked up the case and it's quite serious; kidnapping and rape! Guess they haven't had the trial yet. I do love their Winds of Creation.

Music General always seemed the most active and even it wasn't extremely lively. Oh ok. Well it hasn't been as active lately, but we try to at least keep the concert thread updated with some brief reviews of whatever shows we all go to

Also WHY isn't Yes in this poll?!"Yes" isn't in the poll for the same reason Hendrix isn't in the poll.
They suck, and are loved only by crack heads on drugs.
No offense.
The best song Hendrix did he stole from Dylan, and Dylan's version was far superior, though Dylan never admitted it. Hendrix put on a show, but there was no emotion, no motivation. Dylan's version sounded motivated. Hendrix was simply a mechanic who is loved by idiots with guitars. No musician should ever be allowed to vote on polls like these. They're warped and just look for mechanics.
Sorry about Queen and the others not listed. Oversights.
