A lot of people seem to drink eggnog during the holidays. I find it vile, but that's me.

I don't like it, mostly because I really do not like nutmeg.

Absolutely. If it wasn't so high in fat and sugar I'd drink a lot more of it.

I've never had it. It seems to be an American thing, I hear it mentioned all the time in American sitcoms.

Yes, I usually buy a couple of half gallons of the non-alcoholic store brand throughout the holidays...
It's actually pretty mild on the spices.
Good Stuff.

I've never had it. It seems to be an American thing, I hear it mentioned all the time in American sitcoms. It was popular in England back when they were colonizing the Americas as they were the ones that brought it over. For whatever reason it fell into disfavour well over a century ago there (it had been a rich man's drink so maybe once the plebes could afford it thanks to the industrial revolution the aristocracy lost interest, just as they did with tattoos). It's remained somewhat popular here, probably because of it's ties to Christmas.

So that brings up another (related) question. Is there an alcoholic version that you can buy in the stores? (I live in a place where alcohol is not sold in the grocery stores). I always thought that the alcohol is added after-the-fact. Am I mistaken?

You will find it in liquor stores, though. I saw Evan Williams egg nog at Publix Liquors quite recently. But there is nothing like home made, with a good whiskey.

As a kid I used to wish they sold it all year round, and wish that my mom let me put eggnog on breakfast cereal. I loved that stuff. Surprised I'm still alive after seeing the things my parents let me consume mass quantities of. Eggnog being one of them. Breakfast cereal and McRibs as well. In fact, I can almost picture washing a McRib down with a tall glass of eggnog. Good times!
