nearly 100 pages into this. the acerbic voice, tone and language of the narrator - a candid redneck female who is accused of murder takes some getting used to. but i'm enjoying it now. any other fans? i guess its not one of KING's most popular novels. but people seem to like it more than INSOMINA, ROSEMADDER and BAG OF BONES - some of the most hated KING novels ever.

It has been nearly 20 years since I read it, but I have always thought that Delores Clairborne is an excellent book. I'm not sure what makes you think that it is not popular, it was made into a highly successful movie with Kathy Bates as Delores.

Well, please post your thoughts on it when you are done. By the way, I didn't think that insomnia, Rose Madder or Bag of Bones was all that bad.

Well, please post your thoughts on it when you are done. this is my review: This was a really good novel. It had an interesting narrative structure with Dolores Claiborne, talking to the police after she is accused of murdering her employer. The acerbic voice, tone and language of the narrator - a candid redneck female who has had a tough life dealing with her abusive husband and a short-tempered employer, takes some getting used to. The book is set on an island called Little Tall in Maine. I found it tough to read in the beginning with Claiborne’s detailed descriptions of her employer’s scatological escapades. But one can only marvel at King's ability to make even the most beaten down loser characters feel like they are your best friend or someone whom you know. He does this by offering us the character’s thoughts, however dark it might be. King does not deal in subtlety. This is especially true of his small-town characters, all of whom talk in similes and metaphors. Dolores Claiborne is no different. King’s tremendous imagination is another hallmark of this novel. A well-executed murder during an eclipse. The revelation at the end. The novel is full of surprises. Horror fans will not be completely disappointed. There were elements of horror in this book even though it is not an out and out horror novel. Ardent fans of King often talk of Dolores Claiborne with the same contempt that they usually reserve for Insomina, Rosemadder and Bag of Bones - some of the most hated of King’s novels. But I think Dolores Claiborne is a lot better than those novels. Maybe the narrative structure prevented King from exploring the possibilities of the characters and the setting. I was surprised that he did not give us a good look around the Island. There were a few unremarkable bits. But the narrator and her life are interesting. I rate this book a 3.5/5 and I intend to check out the movie very soon. (6/10)

Honestly, I think Dolores Claiborne is one of his best books, definitely in the top 10 anyway.
I don't really get the criticism about the lack of a horror element to the story, Stephen King has a lot of books and short stories that aren't really horror, including many of his best.
Firestarter, The Body (the short story that was turned into the movie Stand By Me), Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Eyes of the Dragon, The Dark Tower series, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, The Dead Zone, 11/22/63, none of these books or short stories would qualify as horror, some are just generic fantasy novels and several of the ones I listed don't even have any kind of fantasy element and are just normal stories.
I still don't know where you get the idea that Delores Claiborne is not a popular or well-liked book, that is definitely not the impression I have gotten in my more than years of involvement in Stephen King fandom. I would actually rank it as one of his more popular books. It is especially popular with non-horror fans, whenever I'm talking with someone who isn't really a fan of horror and mention Stephen King, I often hear them say 'I liked the one book he died, what's it called, Delores something or other?' It's one of his few books that is popular with fans of fiction in general and not just the 'Stephen King fans'.

I liked it. I LOVED Bag of Bones, though. It's one of my favorites. I love ghost stories, and it was almost romantic. It wasn't King's classic horror, and that's why people hated it. The Dark Tower series is a master piece for the most part, especially 1, 4, and 7. I think 4 was my favorite of the series. I hated Lisey's story. My least favorite King novel to date is Dr. Sleep. It was so obvious he shoe-horned in The Shining reference to get it to sell. I pretty much stopped reading him after that.

Dolores Claiborne is one of my favourite King novels. It's a marvelous read, with little to no horror in it, but with compelling characters, and a very strong story.
A good movie, but again, the book is a heck of a lot better. (although the movie is really good, just leaves out too much of the novel, especially the relationship of Dolores with her employer)

It's a riveting novel that basically amounts to one long monologue by the title character. I quite enjoy it. The movie version is pretty good (Kathy Bates is a great Dolores) and under rated in terms of King adaptations.

Big fan of King. I read Dolores recently and in my mind it suffered from me having seen the wonderful Kathy Bates act out the character in the film way back when. I couldn't not think of the film and compare. But the book is solid, just not one of my top ones for King.
The other eclipse book, Geralds Game, wasn't particularly great either but it did have some very disturbing scenes. 'Degloving' for instance.

Better than Gerald's Game for sure, but it's not saying much. The film adaptation was better than the book IMO.
