Been listening to a lot of XTC lately Incredibly underrated band.
If Partridge could've overcome his stage fright issues they could've been so much bigger.Agreed. I've gone through their discography about 4 times over the past several months. I've basically come to the conclusion that they're at least one of 5 best bands of the last 40 years and Partridge one of the 5 best songwriters since Lennon/McCartney. It was definitely a shame about Partridge's stage fright limiting their live appearances, but I also think they're a great example of perfectionist, studio artists. I find it even more a shame that they seemed to have stopped recording. Their last two albums certainly gave no hint of a decline in their talents. Indeed.

Speaking of God songs and prog rock bands, Neal Morse from Spock's Beard and Transatlantic is also openly Christian and religion is a major part of his lyrics. Here's one gorgeous, non-epic example:

I don't know if these are really about God--Mark Hollis's mumble is indecipherable, and the written lyrics are just as cryptic--but the last two Talk Talk albums and Mark Hollis's lone solo album are as profoundly, spiritually moving as any music I know of.

Nice choices. I've also been on a prog kick recently going through Yes and King Crimson--in particular the new Steven Wilson surround remixes. Jethro Tull is up next. SW has been a busy man. I have a few of his KC remixes and they're awesome. I'm a huge fan of just about everything he does. His post-PT solo material is excellent. I'm really looking forward to his next album and I'm hoping to hear more of Ninet on it this time.

They're complete overkill but real treasure troves for nutty fans like myself. I don't know if I'll ever be able to work through all the live material, but anyone who knows KC knows they're at their best live. I do hope they end up giving the same treatment to the three post-Court albums and their last two; which are the only eras where there's a relative dearth of live material. I'm a huge SW fan as well, both solo and with PT and as a producer as well. I actually found him when he was producing Opeth, one of my absolute favorite bands. I always look forward to whatever SW has coming down the pike.

They played a lot of their earlier songs in addition to the newer stuff. It was a really great concert.

I always look forward to whatever SW has coming down the pike. Remember when I said I'm a fan of most everything he does? I can't stand his collaboration with Mikael Akerfeldt, "Storm Corrosion." I listen to it and I'm left hollow, wondering where the songs were. If this is any indication of Opeth, I can't help but wonder why so many like them.

Funnily enough, one of the recordings in their Road to Red box was when they played the Oklahoma State Fair in 1974; probably the only time they've ever come to my neck of the woods!

It was very much a side-project inspired by their more, errr, eclectic and esoteric tastes: various art-rock, modern classical, minimalist, etc. stuff. I wasn't a big fan of it either. In fact, as Opeth have shifted more and more into classic prog territory I've lost more and more interest. From about '95-'05 they were pretty much the best--most important/influential/innovative--metal band on the planet, but I think Wilson really inspired Mikael to branch out and explore more things and they've been less consistent since then. This is Opeth at their best:

I'm not sure if this counts, but one of my Top 3 Alanis Morissette songs is 'Still' (which I believe is meant to be from God's perspective), which is played over the end credits of the movie Dogma (1999).
Warning: This video contains images which some might find disturbing.
