I have read the LOTR novels a few times and while I am not a fan to the point I have to read (and study) every historical event in Middle-Earth, I do admire what Tolkien was able to accomplish, arguably the greatest fantasy story of all times. When Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring came out, we were all excited, went and watched it and gotta say I was less than impressed and even less so with parts 2 and 3 and I know I am way in the minority having that opinion. When we got home, my brother was watching a film on his laptop, none other than this animated version Lord of the Rings from 1978. I sat down and we ended up watching it and I was shocked. This film captures the novel LOTR so much better than Jackson did. The voicework is absolutely amazing, especially that of the late great John Hurt as Aragorn. The animation is inconsistent, thanks to a technique called rotoscoping, where they use live action film and then 'animate' over it, or something like that. It's pretty obvious and does tend to ruin the fantasy of it all. But then there is some beautiful animation, too. And the score is beautiful. It's obvious they were running into production problems, money, time constraints or whatever because it is so rushed the last 30 minutes. A shame because there is much to like in this film. 8/10

There a lot to enjoy in this version. With some better character designs and a more memorable score, it could have rated as a classic in its own right. Peter Jackson was obviously highly influenced by it.

6/10. Annoyed by some of the character designs and the story ending right after 'The Two Towers' but it's worth a look.
