When do you think Star Wars peaked in popularity?
I'd say it's a three way tie between 1999, 2005 and now here in the 2010's with Disney making all these new movies that has made Star Wars more mainstream than ever before. Everyone has some sort of interest in Star Wars now whether it be the Originals, the Prequels or the new movies. I'll give my reasons why 1999 and 2005 could also count as the peak for the franchise:
1999 - A new Star Wars film came out for the first time in 16 years and the anticipation for it was off the charts! Merchandise for the film and the OT was everywhere that year and we even got see interviews famous celebrities speaking about their thoughts on Episode I.
2005 - It was the year Episode III came out and was not only the film that would serve as the complete conclusion to the Prequels and finally tell us how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader, but it was marketed as the last Star Wars film to ever to be released and everyone thought at the time it was going to be the last Star Wars film ever! Not to mention the fact that everyone loved it the best of the Prequels and it did an excellent job of connecting the Prequels and the Originals together.

When do you think Star Wars peaked in popularity? 1999 - A new Star Wars film TPM came out for the first time in 16 years and the anticipation for it was off the charts! ^^^THIS^^^
I downloaded that first trailer for an entire day to finally see it! And EVERYBODY was talking about it! People were going to the theatre to see garbage movies like Meet Joe Black and Wing Commander just to see the trailer that was attached to it! Ner... uh, fans that weren't even born when the OT came out lined up for MONTHS ahead of time at certain theatres just to see it first! And who didn't jizz in their pants a little when we first saw Darth Mauls double bladed lightsaber in the trailer?! I still jizz thinking about it now! I was in a theatre watching ANOTHER movie AFTER TPM had come out, and the TPM trailer came on, and ner.. uh fans STILL applauded! Surely they had ALREADY seen the movie!
It was out of control!!!
...then we saw the actual movie... (cue deflating balloon sound)

Yeah true I was in second grade and I remember watching the trailer on the library computer way back when it was first released. I was so excited.

Yeah but the population was smaller then. The question wasn’t per capita. If so the late seventies probably was it.
