He sacrificed himself and became a legend. Why are people saying he didn’t do anything? He’s only a space prophet now.
It remains to be seen whether Luke will be portrayed as a Force ghost prophet
or a legend in the next film. There might be no sighting or mention of him for all we know.
But it's a stretch to call the Luke Skywalker of TLJ a space Jesus anyway. Jesus didn't:
...Stand over a sleeping and waking, adolescent Judas with a sword drawn; contemplating killing him.
...Wait to die when John the Baptist was killed. He continued to lead by example; putting himself in the path of ridicule and in harm's way.
...Hide on a secret island in the Mediterranean Sea shortly after forming his first group of disciples.
...Cut himself off from the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit, only to use it at the end to make an astral projection of himself being tortured and executed.
The Luke Skywalker of TLJ was ironically more like Vader than anyone else.
After Anakin became Vader he spent his entire life being a murdering conqueror who tortured or killed people at a whim. Then at the very end of his life he acts on a conflicting desire to do a good deed that "strikes a major blow to evil".
In a similar vein, after Luke's academy is destroyed he spent the rest of his life being a "Force neutered, indifferent Vader"; becoming an isolated hermit on a secret island on a secret planet. Even after he finds out updates of an even more perilous situation from Rey, he continued a path of surly negativity and indifferent neutrality. Only when the last of the Resistance is facing destruction does he intervene through the Force. And even then, it's unclear whether Luke intentionally sacrificed himself or whether it was accidental from over-expending himself with the Force.
