They have no original franchise character who can be a plot point for the next one (I dont think a ghost Luke will do it).
Ian McDiarmid is still kicking.
The Emperor was resurrected as a clone in one of the comics.
Another option is Boba Fett (or someone wearing his costume). In a comic he briefly got out of the Sarlaac pit, and an article from 1980s Starlog also speculated his return for the sequel trilogy.
They could even cart out a relative of Jabba at this point.
I don't think Darth Vader (or a reasonable facsimile) is off limits for a return appearance either.
I put my bet on the resurrection of one of the OT villains as a marketing ploy.

I would've tolerated a Palpatine Clone. Or a returned Darth Bane. Or a cabal of Palpatine's Dark Side Adepts who hid themselves and stealthily took over the Empire remnant for 30+ years until revealing themselves. Kinda like Darth Krayt and the One Sith. On the joke side, an alive Mace Windu who has fallen to the Dark Side and kept alive and strong enough in Vong armor and wants to kill Skywalkers and their Skywalker-tainted New Jedi Order.

No. That would be the final concession of creative corruption and bankruptcy. Only character I would be ok with would be Darth Plagueis provided they have ideas how to properly use him without ruining his legend.
DarthSidious can appear in a spin off; Boba Fett better stay dead.
But I see no reason why Luke & his Ghost-Jedi gang cannot return and kick ass: With the recent Yoda-cameo we learned that Force ghosts can manipulate the real world with lightning and by kicking Luke with the cane. Who would have thought, would have opened entirely new options in the OT timeline.

They have Lando left.
In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they get Billy Dee Williams to play Lando again and kill him off.

HELL no, which is why I'm surprised you're not agreeable to a higher probability of it happening.

"Welp, I'll bet old Billy Dee's gonna get that call after all, even though they were like, 'FUCK LANDO' in every press run-up to VIII." I also love their reluctance to include the one major color of character from the original films in their trainwreck SJW sequels. There's something vaguely amusing in there as well if you pull at that thread...

You mean like the Force Ghost Jedi gang led by Luke suddenly appearing in Act 3 and clobbering the First Order into retreat, and the FO then unleashing hundreds of Palpatine and Fett clones against them, and Rey finally saving the Force gang and Rebels with some new MaRey Sue skill. Epic and fitting conclusion if you love so-bad-it's-good movies!

Isn't Billy Dee Williams in poor health? I would have assumed they already gave him a call for TFA. Even Wedge was asked.
True, a Force ghost seems to be able to do anything these days.
Maybe they will get...
Bossk!
