Thanks for the recommendation. I've seen some movies I believe were commissioned as part of the same series drawing inspiration from American International Pictures releases.

Rewatched this one the other week. Stellar made for TV film with an interesting mythology based story and top-shelf practical effects. Very old school adventure horror.

Wish they would have made a part two. The way it ended I thought they would. the first time I saw it I thought is her daughter going to be OK or will she turn into a creature The real name of it lead me (and others) to believe there would be at least a part two. Mermaid Chronicles Part 1: She Creature

This was a fine "remake" of classic AIP films by the Stan Winston studios group for Cinemax's Creature Features program, near Halloween of 2001. Others in that group included Earth vs the Spider, How to Make a Monster, Day the World Ended and Teenage Caveman. Though generally "remakes" in title only, I would recommend them all, and also watch the originals as well.

I saw this movie quite a long time ago when I recorded it from TV, and haven't gotten the chance to rewatch it because it hasn't been on again since then. From what little I can recall of it, I remember thinking that the actress portraying the mermaid did a good job of making her seem 'otherworldly' in the way she acted. I know that might sound strange, but oftentimes I find when actors/actresses are playing these mystical creatures, they don't seem to make them 'feel' like they're completely different to humans. Whereas, with the mermaid here, it definitely felt like she was something else entirely (even if her top half appeared human). She also felt actually dangerous, I thought. What I mean is, even though she appeared to be this beautiful woman (who happened to have a fish tail), she gave off this 'unsettling' feeling - and it was no wonder, considering she ate people. However, one could understand people being drawn to her. She definitely gave of a mysterious vibe, and that seemed to be part of her allure. Like I said, I haven't watched this movie in a long time and remember very little of it, but one thing I *do* recall is that I was liking the movie up until when the mermaid transformed into a monster - it was at that point that I felt the movie broke the 'mood' it had set up, as the actress (who'd been doing a really nice job of conveying a deadly being) was replaced by something obviously fake-looking and not at all scary. I think the closest I've come to seeing the 'beautiful but deadly' mermaid since this^ movie was in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The mermaids in that had the 'sexy-but-will-bite-your-face-off' thing going, but sadly weren't featured/focused on enough - though, for me, they were the highlight of the film. Still, I have yet to see another movie which portrays mermaids as creepily as this movie did (for the majority of it, anyway).
