This might sound stupid ok: I have to go to someones house and eat some food, this relative is 90 or 89 I don't remember. Last time I went this person made us all pray before eating, I don't believe in that stuff but I did it anyway cuz I was forced, well not forced but sor t of. Do you think it's rude if I tell them I don't want to pray next time? lol Is that rude to tell a 90 year old that I can't pray cuz I don't believe in it, or should I just pray anyway, and then hate myself afterwards. lol. Seriously though. I feel like I 'm somewhere between a rock and a hard place, no matter what I do in this situation is wrong. I'm saying if you have been in a similar situation what did you do. Or what would you do?
The old testament if filled with holes so I don't belive any of it. God don't exist for me.

Just pray for this person's death. Yea? I could pray that trump gets impeached, cuz then Pence would be even worse. So that'd be great.

Just go with the flow and not cause a ruckus. If they're that old, it sounds like you won't be doing it for longer anyway.

Geez, quit thinking about being a goober and pray with the old lady or at least simply shut up.
It's a few seconds and then you have the 364.8999999 days to not worry about it again.
You don't want to be that guy

I was an atheist in a church school. I am an expert at thinking about something else more fun when I close my eyes and bend my head. Any fool can do it!

The old testament if filled with holes so I don't belive any of it. God don't exist for me. Clarification needed - are you expected to pray out loud with the others or out loud by yourself? If not, then just stay silent with your head bowed and eyes closed. You can do an internal eye roll, think about anything but prayer, count silently to see how long the prayer lasts... But if your out-loud participation is required, that's another matter. If everyone else is praying out loud, just don't speak. If you are required to pray out loud by yourself, as in 'what do you pray for?' just say "world peace". Or, whirled peas. My mother is 94, a lifelong Christian, but when it is just her and me, there is no praying. I don't know if she realizes that I am an atheist, but she knows that 'I have problems with organized religion' and I haven't been to church since my father's funeral in 2004. If this is not a close relative, just divert. It's not worth making an issue of it.

When someone prays at a dinner I'm at it's one person. I don't close my eyes and tilt my head down. What I do is check out what everyone else is doing. Sometimes my Dad will be doing what I'm doing. Why don't you just do that instead?

I mean if you are so opposed to praying, which I get since it might be dishonest, then simply be quiet while old lady prays. The tradition isn't about you so don't bother making it about you.

As long as they're not praying for over 10 minutes, be a man and gut it out.

But if I voiced my atheism and irritation at having to 'go along', it would start an exchange as endless and divisive as any thread on this board. And that would ruin your dinner.

The older person isn't looking for you to say a prayer yourself-correct? If so what's the harm is sitting quietly for a minute while another person prays?
