I get that this is a borderline rhetorical question, but still, I wanna know. Maybe it's because I've had the original trilogy as a completed story for years, and we always knew the prequels' endgame, but I don't know, while I did like The Last Jedi, I don't know.....I just can't see how it will neatly tie into a third film of a trilogy, because I felt that the story didn't really go anywhere, characters sure, but the story just didn't progress.

Well we can see the end of The First Order I guess. Until for them to re-group in another trilogy.

I agree. The story just ran in place for almost the entire runtime. There were one or two big moments, but not much else. I understand that this technique was intentional, to focus on characters instead of plot, but I just think that more should've happened.
I think that Episode IX can be good and can tie up these three movies into a respectable trilogy if they focus on Kylo. Forget Rey and the Resistance (or rebels or whatever they're calling themselves now) and focus on what is interesting. Rey no longer has any intrigue behind her name and her character has essentially been ruined even more since she wasn't given a reason for her unparalleled talent with the Force.
Kylo is powerful with the Force. It makes sense as to why he is as well. He trained under Luke and then under Snoke. Focusing on Kylo Ren would help this trilogy immensely. Rey should become a side character. But they will never do that and I'm afraid that JJ and RJ are just alternating back and forth with pinning the other in a corner.

I actually would love to see a twist in episode 9 where Rey turns to the dark side, but Disney wouldn't have the balls to do it.

Y'know, its not a stupid question at all. The more I think of it the more I feel like TLJ was actually more of a Ep 7.1 than a Ep 8. If the next movie is supposed to finish this trilogy then A LOT will have to happen in one short movie. TLJ left that characters worse than they were in TFA.
Plus, the more and more they step away from actually numbering them as Episode 7, 8, 9 etc. in the titles the more I feel like this is open ended. I actually don't think they will end the episodic movies at Ep 9. I think they'll go on...

Here's how a trilogy should work: Act 1, or Movie 1 in this case: Put your characters up in a tree. Check! Act 2, Movie 2 : Throw rocks at them. Double Check! Act 3, Movie 3 : Get them back down. Yet to been seen. I think they are pretty well on their way. But there's a tendency in Hollywood anymore to make that last chapter split in two, al la Deathly Hallows and Mockingjay, let's hope that greed doesn't cause a similar thing and suddenly spread a 3 part story into 4. Or even worse, like they did with The Hobbit, take a 1 part story and make it into 3!
