Yes, he wasn't OT Luke, but his change was kind of the point. Many young idealist became monsters later. The real flaw here is that TLJ did not plausibly explain Lukes change so that we believe it's the same person. But that's more the fault of the TFA scrip which set Luke up as a coward who failed and went hiding while letting the Empire rise and murder again. |

Would maybe had they set up that the why Luke searched Ben's mind was because Luke had visions of Ben's future, of him burning the temple, killing the students and even killing Han, so that's why he reacts to the Snoke revelation the way he did sat better with you? Or if they have Luke simply state their had been another student corrupted by the dark side but he didn't figure it out until they had killed x amount of people already, either one gives a reason for the reaction, though I prefer the idea of Luke trying to specifically prevent the birth of Kylo is what creates the monster myself.

It was just a fleeting moment like he had with his father, the diference is ben woke up and killed everyone and broke luke's faith wich is restored in the end. I don't get what people don't understand.

Me neither, he reacted before luke had time to explain or do whatever , and then it was too late. I can see how that can brake even a Jedi's Spirit... I still don't get what's to understand... my niece unsderstood and she is like 13... I didn't explain anything. |

Just like Yoda that at first sight is a coward we then learn that he had good reason to hide like a pussy. From a certain point of view. Fear is a quick and easy path to darkness and he was afraid for that moment.
He stopped himself, that was Luke's power.
I do agree the exposition of getting to that point had a great deal to be desired.

Luke wouldn't even kill Sith Lord Darth Vader as he lay unarmed on the floor, yet he's willing even for a fleeting moment to kill an unarmed, sleeping child?! His own father he won't kill but his nephew he will? No, it didn't work for me.  |

I wonder if a five-second quick clip of Luke seeing Snoke doing something dark and evil and then Kylo killing Han, attacking Leia's ship, attacking Luke, burning the temple, slicing up Tekka, etc. would have changed viewer's minds about how Luke could have had a reflexive moment. It could have actually been a great, horrific scene and even a perfect place to bring in old Wilhelm. Alas, the execution suuuuuuucked. |

His own father he won't kill but his nephew he will? No, it didn't work for me. In fairness, Kylo is at least 25 in that scene. But nonetheless, they did not convince us that Luke would do something like that. |

And because nothing to suggest his characterization should have changed was presented in the movie via exposition of any kind, it's out of character and inconsistent with what came before. Maybe they could have pulled from the EU and Kylo could have killed Luke's love interest, or child out of some misguided attempt to save someone else...So many ways they could have gone, and they went with ineptitude. |

Luke having moments of attempted murder to save others (in this case, Kylo's future victims) is par for the course. And here, he didn't even get that far.
