Anyone else remember the massive amount of hype for the Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones back in 2002?
The film was HUGE. It was on every Pepsi/Mountain Dew/7-Up/etc. soda can the whole entire summer that year. So any time you'd see someone drinking a Pepsi, it'd be like Jango Fett's face on it or something lol. Toys for the movie were being sold at every Pizza Hut, KFC, and Taco Bell. The Pepsi deal was monstrous, $3 billion alone for that. The new movies have a had a lot of cross promotions, but nothing as large as that deal.
Even MTV stopped all their other music videos to show world premiere of the "Across the Stars" music video and I even remember my radio station did the same (kinda weird having a pop station all of the sudden playing orchestral film music). And this is back when MTV actually played music videos.
The fact that TPM made $460 million domestic and $1,248,798,828 worldwide despite not being as great The Phantom Menace says a lot, if it had been even better than The Phantom Menace, I think it would have surpassed Titanic easily and probably higher box office numbers than Avatar right now.
Keep in mind too back then, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Marvel movies weren't a big thing or any of that. There was *nothing* but Star Wars. It was the earth, the moon and the stars. There was none of the division with the new movies either because everyone LOVED The Phantom Menace and Star Wars was this untouchable almost "holy" thing back then.
They've even made movies about the Episode II hype and release (Fanboys and so on). Attack of the Clones was HUGE!!! The world was a completely different place back in 2002, people were expecting like a ... religious experience, and when that didn't happen, there was a big backlash. It was definitely a more innocent time in a lot of ways.
It's actually somewhat jarring that just 3 years later Star Wars would largely be usurped by Harry Potter in that hype category.  |

I remember TPM had huge hype. AOTC did too, but it was of the "let's hope the first one sucking was just a fluke" variety.
Then we found out, it wasn't a fluke.

They really did that with Across the Stars? That's awesome. What are you talking about Clones not being as good as Menace? It was better in pretty much every way. What are you talking about Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Marvel movies not being big things? HP and LOTR were also huge back then. Okay Marvel not so much, but Spider-Man was. |

I do. I remember people going crazy in the theatre when Yoda pulled his lightsaber out.
It's too bad the movie itself was a big letdown though. Worst Star Wars film by far for me.
Fortunately, Episode III helped redeem the prequel trilogy.

AOTC was big, but it was heavily overshadowed by Spider-Man. As someone who remembers going to see both films, AOTC was successful, but Spider-Man was a freaking phenomenon.

The biggest hype it got was pre-social media hope for 'real' Star Wars after little orphan Ani vs. the Droids.
Its 'Breathing' teaser promised greatness... alas its script was covered in sand. I still like AOTC, though it admittedly plays more like Saturday morning cartoon than Saturday afternoon matinee which inspired it.
