After film #8, I cannot think of another franchise where the acts, emotions, and motivations of the characters, actors, directors, producers, and film corporations are so passionately debated as Star Wars.
This isn't a case of comparing and arguing the quality of differing products, like MCU vs. DCEU. This is a passion for how the story is going, where it should be going, how you would do it differently, and how deviating from expectations ruins childhoods.
There isn't anything close to this, even in it's present iteration. IMHO. Fans who love it, fans who love to hate it. All pouring over every detail, with tons threatening to leave for something else, but always giving it that "one last chance" in the end, over and over. Some who love to hate it are admitting watching it again just to reinforce how much they love to hate it. BECAUSE THERE"S NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT!
Anyone feel differently? What are you going to do, where else in cinema can you get a Soap Opera fan fix like this?
I asked this same question on IMDB two years ago, and absolutely nothing's changed here, except people flip sides on whether they loved the latest episode or loved to hate it.

I'm at a point in my life where getting out to a theater for a specific movie is a real pain in the ass. So, I'll just stop giving myself an annual pain in the ass and I won't turn to anything else. Although if Donna Tartt finally let's someone option one of her books, I'll go see that. Oh, and if anyone does Paradise Lost well (like was being discussed and then fizzled), I'll go see that. Other that, I don't really care for movies in general these days anyway, so no big loss for me. Losing Star Wars is a big loss, yes, but losing a reason to go to the cinema, no.

I asked this same question on IMDB two years ago, and absolutely nothing's changed here, except people flip sides on whether they loved the latest episode or loved to hate it. well, like I said in another place a bad Star wars movie is still pretty great. There's nothing like it. I love the MCU if you didn't guess but that works because they are making a universe like the comics. Star wars is more than that. It's my childhood, my teenage years, and my adulthood. It's a constant in my life since I started going to the movies. I don't feel the same when going to a Star wars movie. It's an experience. It's not going to the movies, it's going to see Star wars. It's a different feeling. So where do I go next? I'm going to see solo and then episode 9, I'm going to read the books and the comics and the TV shows. And then I'm going to see what's next and probably experience it with the same feeling I always have when a new Star wars comes out. In between I'm going to see all the other movies and read all the books I want to watch and read, but nothing compares to Star wars. (Not even the MCU, it's too young, but shush about it ok?)

So you're not going to watch and overanalyze every frame of Episode IX? That's what Star Wars is all about Charlie Brown!

Good for you, have fun with it. Hope for you that the MCU will give you the Star Wars joy of going over it with a fine tooth comb, but I'm not sure they have enough Soap in their stories, they'll need to tie more emotion and family drama. The Guardians of The Galaxy films are the ones that do incorporate that element, but I'm not sure if they've got the balls to put those schmucks up front of their bread and butter properties.

If Snoke is not in it, I will not see it. I would've bitched and moaned about every other stupid thing TLJ did and then greedily bought my Milk Duds for Ep. IX if Snoke survived. There has yet to be a SW movie without a believable villain. Ep. IX will be the first. I'm into movies like the SW movies for their great villains who require extreme measures to defeat. Without the villain, they are not interesting. At all. I am not interested in this: at all.

Yeah I don't live near a theater, so I can't go to the theaters as often as I used to.

I've never understood the whole 'ruining my childhood' thing. The originals are still there to enjoy, just watch the movies you like. I've seen enough bad sequels over the years to be numb to it at this point. I hated TLJ, but I don't ever have to watch it again. They can keep making Star Wars movies into infinity, I don't have to watch them. It isn't unprecedented in the history of cinema.
Look at these terrible sequels:
Godfather III The Dark Knight Rises Spider-Man 3 Prometheus (and anything after) Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Anything after Die Hard 3 Bourne Legacy & Jason Bourne Blade Runner 2049 The Star Wars prequel trilogy (maybe debatable on this board) Batman Forever, Batman & Robin Superman 3 & 4 (and Returns) Most of the X-Men universe is total crap but I still enjoy a few of the movies
And that's just off the top of my head, I'm sure there are a ton that I'm blanking on right now.
And yet I still love the original films and can watch them without thinking about later chapters that failed miserably. Hell, you don't always agree with what happens within the movies you do like and you still enjoy them. Is Empire ruined because Boba Fett went out like a bitch in Jedi? It isn't to me.
So I won't be seeing Star Wars movies in the theater anymore. Think of how many years there were between SW movies at one point, is it going to kill me not to have a SW movie to see anymore? This is essentially a different franchise, with a new creative staff and a completely different agenda. Easy enough to ignore, right? I never saw the GI Joe or Transformers (or the new TMNT iteration) movies in theaters despite being a huge fan as a kid. They were poor representations of something I appreciated, so I ignored them. Now I'll have to do the same with Star Wars.
It's ok, I'm used to it.
