"Amy has a new dress that will take your breath away ...forever..."When a mystical red Aztek dress arrives at an american college it soon is followed by a widespread chaos of brutal murders taking place, as it seems to have a way of turning those that come in contact with it, into ruthless predators with a special hunger for sex and violence. With names such as director Tobe Hooper along with a stunning Mädchen Amick in the leading role, backed by veterans R. Lee Ermey, Dee Wallace and Anthony Perkins it is quite strange how it took almost 26 years before this fine little TV made horror-thriller finally made it onto DVD. I have had the VHS on my watchlist for years now, but either have it been to "pricey" or I have just been holding on for a DVD or Blu-ray relase and when it got one last year by Final Cut UK I almost missed out on the fun. The picture and sound was really good, but beside that there is not much else. You have play movie and chapter selections as options, but hey, I take it. I had not seen the movie for ages, probably not since early 00s but I have always wanted to re-watch it and own it in my movie collection so I think it was time to pick it up and I gotta say I liked it very much. Of course, if one take aways the lovely Mädchen Amick the film would probably not be all that much, however I think it was made well and while there are not much gore or blood we do get to see an incredible fine looking female lead who wears that red dress like she was born to do so. Anthony Perkins do not really have all that much to work with here, neither have R. Lee Ermey but still it was fun to see them get their fair share of scenes here and there. The plot is not exactly "groundbreaking", it feels like an overlong episode of Tales from the Crypt meets up with one of Stephen King's many evil stories about things that possesses people, and then all hell is loose. All in all, a fun and well made little TV movie with some very sexy and enjoyable moments and one I am glad I decided to re-watch again.

I've always loved this movie and am delighted you posted this as I live in the UK but did not know the film had sneaked out onto DVD........what a lovely surprise!!! On the movie's old IMDB board, I and others had discussed how frustrating it was that there was no DVD available.
I had (and still have) a copy that I recorded onto a DVD+R disc from the VHS copy I recorded from TV in the early 90's. I cut all the adverts out and the picture quality held up quite nicely. Since then I had transferred it from disc to an MP4 file onto my hard drive.
The movie itself is no masterpiece but personally I find it hugely entertaining - especially with stalwarts like Perkins and Wallace in the mix alongside Amick, who looks striking with or without that cursed red dress!
There are several memorable moments but the one that stands out for me is when the girl strangles her boyfriend in the shower - laughing as she does so while invested with unnatural strength from the fabric of the dress. It is a curiously erotic moment with a very morbid undercurrent. The last thing you expect when a couple are together in a shower.
The film is quirky in that way and Dee Wallace is a lot of fun to see going on the rampage when she tries the dress on for size!
Anyway, I'm heading to Amazon to spend some Christmas gift vouchers on this fun, little-seen Tobe Hooper curio.

I'm glad you enjoyed the movie and I hope you'll also do so when re-visiting it on DVD ,as I thought it was rather fine release (minus any bonus material, subtitles and so on but the picture and sound was very good), and yes I do remember some of the posts/threads in the old IMDb board section, where I would visit or stop on by a few times a year to check if somebody had something new to tell, about either a DVD or Blu-ray release. I liked seeing Mädchen go from the a little naive and shy college student into a sexual godess during the dance/party scene while wearing the dress, but yeah she did look great not matter what clothes she wears. Always fun to see Dee Wallace play the crazy lunatic part, she did well and the shower scene was very well made, almost like it was taken from some Paul Verhoeven/Brian De Palma erotic-thriller.

The DVD arrived the other day and I enjoyed the film more than ever I'm pleased to say. Partly I guess down to the vivid quality of the picture and crisp sound on the disc - certainly an improvement over my years-old transfer from TV. The dance scene took my breath away! Really!! As much of this owed to how Amick danced and moved in the dress as how great she looked in it. Her transformation into vixen while in the dress was such a stark contrast to her character in the rest of the movie. For their part, I have to say that both Daisy Hall and Dee Wallace also looked great while corrupted by the garment and really excelled in their maniacal moments, wreaking havoc while under it's influence. Hall especially in that memorably bizarre shower murder. Daisy Hall cutting loose in the shower! Amick driving us amok! After all these years, it was great to discover that my fondness for the film hasn't dissipated in the slightest.
