I only saw the first half hour or so and it looked really bad. I read the plot description and it seemed like I wasn't missing anything. Is it worth another try?

Yes.
Btw on a related topic, I've seen you post before about other films that you only watched "x" amount of time and should you give it another try?
Can you explain this to me?
Not trying to come off bad, but I don't get the partial viewing of any film let alone asking others if you need to revisit.
Just curious as to why you don't give films a full chance on first try and why you ask for someone to give you justification to give it a full try on a second chance.
Are you just trying to come up with thread topics?

So for example, I might hate a movie first time, but give it another chance and then the second time, I might not hate it as much. I'm therefore asking if it's worth giving movies I gave up on another try.

Especially if the movies have a fairly good reputation or cult following.

I get the one-off it is so horrible that you couldn't watch it but it seems a pattern with you.

I've got to the point of turning movies off if I really don't like them. Seems pointless to sit through the whole thing.... BUT when I do turn them off, it opens up the question I'm asking now.....

If you like jump scare horror and home invasion films, it's worth another try. It's similar to the French film Ils (2006) which is much better and less formulaic.

The Strangers seems to be loved by a good deal of people, but I find it pretty lame. It's starts with a good dramatic scenario for its two main characters, but that doesn't go anywhere at all, and it's really well shot and staged in places, but there's nothing to care about once the invasion begins. We know where its going from the beginning and the suspense of nothing really happening sort of turns to boredom after a while.
I haven't seen Ils, but people seem to think highly of that one too.

Donβt get the love for this one. Itβs not bad at all, but itβs just nothing special. Ils is much better.

It's tremendous.
7/10.
those masks creeped me out.
you've got to be in the proper mood/mindset - all alone on a dark rainy night with a few beers.
i love it like i love Vacancy - a couple on the rocks - who come across Antagonists and and you see them come together to try and survive.
great theater

If you gave up after the first third, you're not gonna like the last two where its thin premise is stretched even thinner. It's an effective little short film dragged out to a boring feature film.

Since it's leaving my HBO app, I decided to give it another chance - as another user suggested - in the right mindset/atmosphere. Anyway, aside from Dennis Reynolds showing up, it was pretty much what I remembered. This movie would be a half hour long if any of the characters had brains (or peripheral vision).

You need to have patience for this movie because it builds slowly, but it was unsettling. The sequel, The Strangers: Prey At Night, will be released in March starring Christina Hendricks.

I liked the poster and the look of the villains but these types of movies I have to be in the mood for. I remember liking it better than the first Purge movie though.

I haven't watched the movie in quite a long time, but I did enjoy the build-up of tension in its first half. It does require being in the right frame of mind for the 'slow build', I think. It's probably not the right movie if you're short on patience. There were two moments that stood out in my mind as 'effectively creepy'. **slight spoilers below if you haven't watched the movie** One was when 'Dollface' (played by Australian-model-turned-part-time-actress, Gemma Ward) first shows up at the door to randomly ask Liv Tyler's character, "Is Tamara home?". That^ GIF doesn't really do the moment justice, but I remember liking how in certain shots you could sort of see half of her face, while the other half was shrouded in shadow. You just got a hint of her face - and that, combined with her weirdly random (and persistent) questioning, I thought, gave an unnerving quality to the scene/s. It also begs the question: Who the heck is Tamara?? Coincidentally, the mermaid character Gemma Ward played in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was named Tamara. This is what Gemma Ward actually looks like (since you never really see her face clearly in the movie): The other effectively creepy moment, I thought, was when one of 'the strangers' seemingly appeared out of nowhere inside the house and just stood there in the background as Liv Tyler's character went about doing stuff in her kitchen completely unaware of the intruder.

Ha, didn't remember Dennis Reynolds being in it at all. I assume he wasn't, but it would make more sense if he was on the side of the killers. Good point on the peripheral vision. It's a little absurd, even though that simple stuff is among the best and most tense in the whole movie. But it is a little hard to take seriously. It's such a slow burn, and I love that kind of thing, but that level of seriousness doesn't forgive the stupidity. When you take yourself that seriously you can't get away with some of the dumb slasher tropes that this movie falls into. 'Prey By Night' is an awful title, but it looks a little stylish and fun. It will likely be, at least, better than average considering what else is coming out around then.

Would have been great if he brought his "f-f-fetish s**t" and they had a battle royale. Excellent point on the seriousness. There's not a moment of levity in the entire movie (things are already awkward from the very beginning because of the rejected marriage proposal), which makes the dumb stuff all the more frustrating. That's why I prefer You're Next, which can also get stupid, but is basically a comedy. I haven't heard of Prey By Night. I'll look into it.
