@viola said there is some good discussion here if you know where to look.
I have found that to be true of all the boards. Reading histories before replying helps and finding old friends from other places.

What with you having nothing to add and all. I'm no fan of thefleetsin myself, if that's what you mean, but what do you expect from virtually anonymous discussion boards anyway?

I am a habitual reader of "recent posts / threads" and am often surprised when I look at just which board I am on when I read a post. It's striking me "odd / interesting" that geode is fussing about the poetry and not about the "How Do You Wipe Your Backside ?" thread posted here on "Religion, Faith and Spirituality". Perhaps as an outsider to this area, I am missing something about the purpose of the board ?
edited to add To be fair, the "Wipe yourself" type threads, the Yewtewb spam, etc. - these are all a result of the board's decline. While we still have some few good folks who discuss the general topic, it's a marked contrast from the old IMDB (not towards the end, but a couple of years before it, when the board peaked in participation). We lost a good number of topical posters to mindless spam from old IMDB trolls, and the board never recovered. The loss of functional posters quickly segued to the rise of the lulzy types - where we used to avoid shit-posting and callout threads, these types began pressing more and more in that direction. The board today is the result - the more shitposts, the less we see activity from functional people. Most of those here probably notice this less than you do at a glance because, like a frog in boiling water, they've experienced the change so slowly it hardly bears notice. But yeah, it's a general shit-post kind of place now, with a smattering of dialogue between the herp-derps. Strangely, the politics board features more on-topic discussion and even RFS topics now and again (politics used to be shit-post central). But I don't talk that up too much as I'm already seeing shit-posters here move over there for lack of lulz. Edit: Aaaaand of course it's the dude who's posted OVER 60 INDIVIDUAL CALLOUTS to me alone who tries to take umbrage.

And while you're at it, give us an example of good folks discussing the general topic.

The board (meaning whatever incarnation of RFS we’ve had over the years) had its glory days somewhere between 2005 and 2009...the board at that time had productive conversations, not just about religion and other hot button issues, but entertainment, sports, politics, etc. sure there were a few flame wars but there was enough content around it that it seemed to get hardly more than a chuckle from the masses and never came close to dominating the landscape. The rise of social media and death to anonymous message boards goes hand in hand and has a lot to do with the amount of reasonable and well adjusted posters leaving over the years and turning this place into what it is now. There’s still quite a few interesting posters here but hardly the levels of conversation there once was.
Personally I’ve found the Sports, Film General and TV general far more receptive to my types of interests...and they probably always were. It’s just this board had that “one of us” feel to it for so long. Like a small community. It was nice.
For the record I was not fond of what I’ll call the Stelio Days either.

edited to add Well... To be fair... The "How Do You Wipe Your Backside?" thread was never meant to be taken that seriously.... I've been posting here (well... the other Religion board) for a while, and these types of threads were meant to break up the monotony of "Omniscience Means That There Is No Free Will" being discussed for the 400th time... Like Marv says: It’s just this board had that “one of us” feel to it for so long. Like a small community.
Sometimes, you just talk about meaningless shit as a community.... Sometimes, literally.

Personally I’ve found the Sports, Film General and TV general far more receptive to my types of interests. Yeah. While this board seems to be slowly dying... I haven't quite given up on the Site, itself. I'm trying to branch out and see this place as a whole. Been posting more on The Politic board of late... It seems more suited to my style of just trying to make people laugh.. as it moves pretty quickly so there isn't time to focus on "How Do You Wipe Your Backside?" too much And.. I still get to make a semi-serious point or two. Sure.. Some pretentious, self-aggrandizing, humorless dumbfcks might say that I'm just looking for "lulz" posting over there... Hell, even if I was... what the fck is so wrong with trying to make people laugh?
God.. That was one crazy Mofo.

Sometimes, you just talk about meaningless shit as a community.... Sometimes, literally. I have this notion, suggested by my parents and grandparents that in the old days (like the early 1900's) people would sit in their front porches and hang out and sometimes socialize with neighbors. Like a small community. TV and air conditioning probably played a role in that going away. Maybe we have a little of that here, though I expect there was no trolling and mockery, and more respect in those old days. I'm sure there was conflict and gossip too, it just was more restrained probably.

general313 said more respect in those old days.
and no need to go all the way back to the early 1900's to find it. "Humor" was defined differently too but therein lies another subject / topic / molehill.
