I didn't miss that. Is there a section worth quoting that exemplifies the disgusting graphic nature of the book? I'm only asking because I am obsessed with stories of stuff that public schools expose young children to as I have found that, indeed, a lot of it is inappropriate and I am pretty sure I'm sending my kids to private school. no. and sending your kids to private school won't help. but if this was in middle or high school there would be no problem. this was just not a book to get children who were struggling with an interest in reading due to them sucking at it to even start them being interested in reading. As someone who attended both private and public schools, yes, it will help. There's a world of difference. Perhaps you think I'm referring to the kind of private school where kids where uniforms and have rich parents, but are otherwise just like public school kids. I am not. I am referring to a religious school. I'm just curious what was disgusting about the book. I'd be interested in reviewing specific content that was disgusting.

i taught religious school and it's not all its cracked up to be. it depends on what goes on there. i had non-Catholic students [which is fine as long as the parents understand that they would be taught the catholic religion] refuse the particular rules of the catholic religion because their parents said it was okay for them not to. we had students wear the rosary 'even in the month of mary'.
disgusting... he drops his fife down the hole where the slaves are kept. he can see it from the deck, he just has to climb down into the hole -- not even leave the ladder. the description of the stench: the literal shit, urine smells along with the overwhelming vomit. that is only smell... then came the description of the sounds: the wailing, the vomiting, the buzzing of flies. Then came the visual description of the flies buzzing round, seeing the actual shit and urine, the vomit all over the place.
and it took him only a couple of seconds to retrieve his fife.

Yeah, but do the 7th grade girls get texts from the boys in their class telling them they are "hot as fuck," or are there contests to see which girl gives the best blowjob? Because that's what my buddy is going through right now with his 7th-grader. When I was in 7th grade in private school, the most controversial thing I ever saw or heard was someone say "shit!" Awww, that doesn't sound too bad. i thought you meant kids were being exposed to something they shouldn't be exposed to at that age. Vomit, poop and urine are hardly what I'd call adult themes. But you meant you thought they were gross. When you said "disgusting," I thought you meant something entirely different.

Also, when I say religious school, I mean Protestant. While I would assume Catholic schools are a little more sheltering than public schools, there can be no doubt that they are nowhere near as sheltering as Protestant schools. We weren't even allowed to hold a girl's hand at the Protestant school I went to.

YOU SUCK AT READING TO BEGIN WITH!

Catcher in the Rye Wuthering Heights
And for similar reasons too (unbearable main characters). I read both a very long time ago and probably owe them both a re-evaluation at some point.

At the school I went to, they couldn't have cared less about money. It was their way or the highway. It was quite militant. That can be a bad thing, but looking back on it now, I'm really glad I went to that school. It saved me from getting in a lot of trouble. I'm not missing that point, calm down. I simply misunderstood what you meant by "disgusting." Now that i can see it was "gross" you were referring to, as opposed to "morally objectionable," I fully see the point. Eh, you're a girl, so you have a different perspective. Poop and puke would not have been a turn-off for most boys. Heck, in 6th grade, it was our go-to topic for a joke. So most boys probably would have particularly enjoyed that section. To your point, though, for people who suck at reading and are turned off by it in general, it's probably best to go with fantasy books like Narnia, Lord of the Rings or A Wrinkle in Time. Kids gravitate to fantasy more at that age than they do adult themes like slave ships.

Slaughterhouse 5 The Great Gatsby A Confederacy of Dunces Zen & The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance A Tale of Two Cities

A Clockwork Orange. The fact I had to keep flipping back and forth between pages just to make sure I was getting the lingo right got very annoying after a while.

Or didn't get. Slaughterhouse-Five. I like some of Vonnegut's other work but I just couldn't grasp what he was going for here at all, it didn't work for me. I tried to read Slaughterhouse Five when I was in my 20s, and I found it completely inaccessible. 20 years later, and I have nothing but love and praise for Slaughterhouse Five. It was soooo emotional and soooo funny. And what style the author had! It is definitely in my top ten novels. I could read it again tomorrow.
That said, I absolutely hated Catch 22. If it were a short short story, like 8 pages or less, than maybe, okay. But, to me, it was the same nonsensical happenings and absurdist point of view, over and over and over and over and over....

Still haven't finished A Confederacy of Dunces. I have yet to finish A Confederacy of Dunces, either. But it's not because I don't find it enjoyable. It's because I am easily distracted and perhaps a bit on the undisciplined side!
John Waters said it is the only novel he would ever consider adapting. Cool!

It isn't a book per se, but I was confounded by Sylvia Plath's collection of poetry, "Ariel", which got a lot of critical praise. And I find her a very interesting person, and I was spellbound by "The Bell Jar".
I personally can't get into Ernest Hemingway. His prose is a little too "healthy" for my tastes.

@dirty pillows, I can't read Hemingway either! All those short, choppy sentences. Can't read Annie Proulx or the same reason.

I don't know if they were critically acclaimed or just popular but I completely hated The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Didn't even finish it, and I usually finish books just to find out how they end. Not this one.
