So yeah, I saw 'Call Me By Your Name' a couple weeks ago and it was overall pretty good. There's some aspects to it that are downright fantastic but also some glaring flaws. I think that the directing, cinematography, use of locations, sound design, and use of music makes this worth a watch for sure but there's one thing that really annoys me. All the reviews call this "a masterpiece about love", "a genuine love story", "a emotional story of love" etc... etc... While watching this, however, the relationship between these two guys (and yes, the age gap did bug me by the way) seemed purely physical and was nothing more than physical lust. There was nothing there that transcended that and I really don't understand how people can call this a film about love when there was not much more to the relationship other than Ellio's lust for Oliver. Did anyone else feel the same way about this in that this "relationship" was quite dull and bland or am I the only one?

As far as I remember, they talked a bunch of times before kissing each other and then talked a lot more times before having sex. They fell in love because they got to know each other.

It was lame. Another excuse for goofy white Americans to virtue signal about how woke they are for watching a movie. Critics gave it 10/10 before they even watched it. "A gay kid and his dad's friend banging each other? It's AAAAMMMAAAAZZZZZZZIIIINNNNGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!! Best movie EVAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to actually watch it."

No, it was because of the way they looked And at best Also had a great personality. But especially at that age hormons do the most talking and just because the feeling of love is primarily fueled by lust doesnt make it less intense. Plus they did get a fair amount of talking done too. To me Call Me By Your Name was amazing for many reasons. The acting, the visuals, the intenrationality of it, the music, but also the way it ended and how it developed. Not your typical teenage love story. Gotta give it that. It kinda transcended typical boundaries and I am not talking about the gay aspect of it. Plus it had a certain level of tenderness that I dont find often in movies. 9/10 from me.

My original thoughts posted above remain, but my overall opinion has changed a lot since then. I’ve found plenty to enjoy here, it’s visually one of the most pleasing movies I’ve ever seen for starters. Recently rewatched Moonlight as well. I prefer this one much, much more.

9/10 from me. And also added to the well known fact, that gay people DO NOT have as big as a pond to fish in and when someone does find somebody that they mutally desire, are on the same wavelength and considering that Elio was almost an adult and the age gap narrows as one grows older, there was a natural and genuine quality to how this relationship evolved. Oliver was also living up to the expectations of others and I'd say he would have ended up quite unhappy with his choices. Elio had the loving support of his parents.
How would attitudes have played out, if Oliver was a 24yr old hot female seducing a 17yr old boy. Yeah man! He scored! agreed. I think most straight people don’t realize how much more difficult it is to find a partner and connection with someone when you only have like 5% of the otherwise normal pool. I mean it’s challenging enough to find someone you click with even when you are straight. The age gap didn’t bother me at all. In Europe the age of consent is usually 15 and this was a very consensual relationship.

I mean it’s challenging enough to find someone you click with even when you are straight. The age gap didn’t bother me at all. In Europe the age of consent is usually 15 and this was a very consensual relationship. People often put moral judgements on the older person for choosing a younger one. Admittedly and understandably it can be questionable and even creepy, but in the context of this film's scenario, it wasn't. There was about a 7yr gap between the characters and Elio wasn't at the lower end of the teen spectrum.
I worked with a 17yr old who's gf was in her mid 20's and had a kid from a previous relationship. People understandably did pass a few comments and I didn't really like him and thought he was douchy. He ended up knocking her up, but they did get married. If it was the other way round, societal hypocritical double standards would have been more biased against an older male with a late teen girl or guy.
my husband is 7 years younger than I am, and not once did we feel like our relationship is inappropriate or had anyone comment something negative about it. and we have been together for a long time. its all about the motivation and maturity of both parties.

The love term gets misused and over-used. These guys did in a loose sense love each other, but much of what they had with each other was driven by lust and Elio flirted with and pursued Oliver. He was on the verge of becoming a man anyway and was an exceptional young man due to his talents and intellect. The context of the era and country it was set in, the age gap was negligible. Armie Hammer could have easily made Oliver appear sleazy, but it is to his acting credit that he didn't.
I did find the film a bit slow and semi-pretentious, but still interesting and involving. I liked it overall. It was pretty moving. I was surprised at how good Archie Hammer was.

"Call Me By Your Name" is a movie we have seen many times before: a young person (almost always a male) who, over the course of a summer has his first romance, first sex, and first heartbreak, ushering in his adulthood. In addition, director Luca Guadagnino continues his theme - and even the setting of vacation land in northern Italy - from his previous film "A Bigger Splash," which is the follies of the rich and famous with a great cast but not to much point.
