with a different actress? Or is it really just the scripts that are the problem? Or both?

The actress is perfect. The scripts and the directing were the weaknesses.

It's both and everything.

It would have been better if they didn't bother in the first place.

It sounds like the scripts and the direction. Something like that franchise as far as the plot goes is almost always going to be silly. But there's always room for improvement. I tried watching the last two and the editing was atrocious. How can you understand anything and expect to care?

I think the real reason they get hate is the overuse of Milla Jovivich as Alice. She was never a character in the game series, and lo and behold, she's the main star that appears in every movie overpowering anything that the T-virus created. I don't think it has to do with the actress, because Milla was okay in these movies. The scripts can also be a lost cause for the films. I still like the Resident Evil franchise, but just a thing to consider.

Having seen probably too many of these films, what I have "learned" so far is that the best of the bunch is the one that is not directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and I think that is the main problem, he should have left the directing part to Alexander Witt (Apocalypse) and focused less on his wife and her "great" acting skills, and more on trying to build up some decent characters you actually cared about and never, NEVER again brought back Michelle Rodriguez.

Actually, Apocalypse wasn't the only one to not be directed by PWSA. The third film, Extinction, was directed by Russell Mulcahy. I figured you never saw that one but I would recommend it since you did mention how the PWSA-directed ones are the weaker ones of this franchise. However, since it's the 3rd you may need to rewatch 1 and 2 first to know what's going on.

Yeah, I guess I somehow missed out on the third one, but seeing now that it is directed by Russell Mulcahy (Razorback & Highlander) I gotta say my interest of it just increased a whole lot. But, I doubt I will ever again go back to the first film (not horrible, just not to keen on wasting anymore time on that one). The second however, I have no trouble with. Thanks for brining up Mulcahy, I really enjoy some of his films, and have been thinking of checking out some of his other stuff, never knew he directed a Resident Evil film, or it have just gone missing.

No problem! It's actually my favourite after the first two. Enjoy watching.

Mila Jovovich does well in the first movie, but in the sequels she becomes a robot and is relegated to cold steely one liners. It's a writing problem.
