Can anybody explain the reasons why this film has a 5 instead of a 6 on imdb rating? It isn't that bad. Were there any lack of logic or unexplained situations in any of the scenes. I've seen movies that are far worse that deserve a 5.

I think that many people don't like it because of this scene:
I'll admit, this scene is weird, but I like the movie anyways.

I'm not a fan. I don't have much love for or maybe the stomach for movies that rely too heavily on gross outs as opposed to tension for it's horror. Feels cheap and lazy to me. Also Eli Roth is always super annoying when he decides to "act".

poelzigI don't think it relied on gross out horror to much extent. That was very evident in the remake. Plus there was a comedy tone in many of the scenes. It combined with the horror element nicely. But I would admit I don't like Roth as an actor. He is better sticking to writing and directing.

I just thought it was kind of dull, kind of gross, and all in all just not that interesting.

I've seen movies that are far worse that deserve a 5. 5 seems fair, if not generous. I think the movie has one big problem: The tone is all over the place. It doesn't know if it wants to be a parody or a comedy or a throwback or bog-standard horror flick so it tries to be everything at once. On the one hand you've got stuff that's meant to be funny like the cop that loves to party, the pancake kid and his ninja flips, and a guy getting a harmonica stuck down his throat like something out of Looney Tunes. On the other hand, you have gore effects and deaths that are surprisingly grounded, not over-the-top enough to be funny, and treated with the utmost seriousness (mostly). It just feels scatterbrained as a film. Take a good horror-comedy like Braindead/Dead Alive. The feel of the movie is very lighthearted and even saccharine at times despite the grotesque things happening in the film. Very early on, the viewer is clued in through framing, cuts, line delivery, and audio cues that it is going to be a comedy and it maintains that tone throughout the entire film. It stays consistent. Or even take a horror deconstruction like Cabin in the Woods. From the outset you know exactly what sort of film it's going to be. It opens on a pair of scientists, rather than the protagonists, and they're humorously bantering with each other so we know the tone is going to be dryly comedic. When we are introduced to the main characters, they twist the classic horror archetypes (a jock who is good in school, a nerd that's good at sports, a survivor girl who has had sex, etc.) so we know the film is also going to be subversive. Cabin Fever doesn't stick to a tone. The way it is shot is always deadly serious even if ridiculous things are happening. That works in its favor once, I suppose. The reason why the pancakes scene is so funny is because of how incompetent it would be if you were supposed to take it seriously. The problem is that you're not sure if you're supposed to take it seriously and it ventures into "so bad it's good" territory rather than simply being comical. Contrast it to the priest kicking ass for the lord from Dead Alive (which was supposed to be funny) to see the distinction. Tone isn't the only problem the film has but it's definitely the biggest one.

It should have stuck to the horror and left most of the comedy behind, it would have been more well regarded by now maybe if it had.

It's practically the same grade.
