The MCU ten years milestone had me thinking about the movies, so while I was at it I decided to write down what I think.
Of course,
these are not facts but mere
personal opinions, so if for any reason anybody feels the absolute necessity to be offended, well I'm sorry because that's
not my intention, but ultimately it's their problem, not mine.
Also, in general I like the idea of the MCU, I applaud the effort and I admire how big and succesfull it has become over the years, but I don't consider myself a fan in any shape or form. I just dig this kind of movies.
Lastly,
scabab and
justanaveragejoe , if by any chance this becomes another MCU vs DCEU wreck, or otherwise devolves in general insults and trolling, please
nuke the thread with
extreme prejudice, thank you.
So, here we go.
Iron Man - My all time favourite. It's a very good origins story that both stays faithful to the original and updates it for a contemporary audience. RDJ is a particularly inspired choice, but the cast in general is great. The balance between action, humour and drama is spot on. The villain is good. Not great, but not abysmal either and I like his motivations. I dig the humour since is not overdone and more often than not has to do with Tony's personality. The only downside for me is Terrence Howard because he's one of those actors that I can't stand to watch.
Ok, right off the bat-

IM-Not my top fav hero. He's basically Marvel's Bruce Wayne only he makes his tech rather than buys it. Both have control issues.
This movie doesn't come alive until that first night flight. Not bad for starting the empire, but Tony is an insecure jerk.
He's actually to blame for much of the bad crap in this universe
Bridges can be hammy & runs to it in places but they scored with garage sale RDJ who was coming off a rocky period. It set the pattern of just dropping someone into a role as apparently Howard was more expensive than RDJ or Bridges.
And hello Son of Coul.
Norton is cold to me. I can't care about anyone I've seen him play.
This is thankless because I watched the series for Bixby who I grew up on. My Favorite Martian with Ray Walston. The Magician. Incredible Hulk. Points to Whedon for going with Ruffalo in Avengers.
This is important because the character has devoted fans, just not enough to sustain him. His book has been cancelled a few times.
At best it plays like an episode of the series. At worst, they can ignore what they choose because it is/isn't part of the universe.
Felt rushed to do a variation of the alcoholic story rolled in with the tech killing him.
Could have lived without the idea theft. Rourke felt like an attempt to repeat RDJ,but he was phoning it in. He really destroyed himself.
A beautiful tale of redemption.
In trying to make a name for himself, a young man throws away all of what his parents taught him, only to find dad wasn't so much of a fossil.
When I was 20, I thought I knew so much more than my parents who were so 50s morals. When I turned 30, I realized they weren't so naive to the workings of the world & I was so inexperienced at 20.
Its what Thor does in this movie.
I love it.
I think its the same aspect I love about Greatest Showman. Another redemption.
And, yeah. Thor has been my hero since I was 5 yrs old. When I heard they were making a movie, I was terrified they would ruin him, but this Thor is noble & brave & heroic just like my hero.
No.
If you think that, you don't get him.
Cap is like Supes. Hero from a bygone era. Cap represents our ideals, not our reality.
Yeah. My other childhood hero. I was sure Marvel hated me, personally going after my 2 favorite heroes.
Not quite as good casting as Hemsworth, but Evans works.
Actually he's like chicken. He fits so many of the blond/blue eyed heroes. Johnny Storm. Johnny Blaze. Steve Rogers. Hell, he could be Kevin Plunder.
.
They stuck with Cap.
Of course he works.
My fav Cap comic is where Nazis want to hold a parade, but the locals try to get Cap help them stop it, but he doesn't. He says the Nazis have the right to their parade, but the locals have the same right to be there to present their side peacefully
They gave us Cap.
I loved Peggy. Watched the series. Bucky was great. The Howling Commandos were great. Zola was great.
A pretty perfect superhero film.
My rating-
Do I want to see it again?
Do I care about the characters?
Does my mind wander to the real world?
If I'm thinking about my laundry/errands instead of the film, it's not a 10.
There is no fat to this film.
Whedon made like a 3 hour film & had to cut it down, removing scenes he personally liked, but had to go to meet the time restriction.
It works as well as IM2.
We have Tony where the movies have taken him.
He is science.
Thor freaks him out.
The aliens freak him out.
He doesn't like losing people like his parents or Coulson. These automated suits take us straight to Ultron.
.
This reinforces the brothers.
It gives us an infinity stone.
It gives us Mjolnir as a character.
Bucky's back.
I felt sorry for the poor dude.
I'm sorry.
You don't seem to catch the flow of these movies.
The dance-off isn't a joke.
It's called distraction.
I am looking forward to Ronan in Captain Marvel.
The stresses showed. It was after this movie Perlmutter was shuffled to the tv side.
This eas a victim of too grand a vision. In a couple spots Whedon managed to bring a comic book to the movie screen. That opening bit-hero/panel, hero/panel-all in action/splash page.
This is Tony's fault.
Tony trying to fix everything mucking everything up.
Hell, its midnight
Maybe I'll pick up tomorrow
