I think ready player one is likely to be a bigger bomb. MEG imo WILL MOST LIKELY BE THE NEXT JAWS a film that makes people afraid of the ocean again with the thought of something that big possibly living deep down in the ocean
statham is the next Reynolds. Stallone. and Schwarzenegger all rolled into one

People have apparently been highly anticipating this movie for many years, but I really doubt that anybody is happy about the way this is shaping up. And the premise sounds more like a SyFy channel original than a major blockbuster. I vote on the side of bomb as well. It's best hope is to be the next Deep Blue Sea.

I think your point is that there is a Deep Blue Sea 2? Hard to tell, with all the subtlety.
But I don't think that movie has a shot at being the next Deep Blue Sea either. It's a shitty straight to dvd/vod cheapie. Warner Bros production or not.
Meg has a pseudo-famous cast, an old pro director, and a big budget.
It has no chance at being the next Jaws (...obviously...), but it's best hope is to be the next big budget schlock fest that's so absurd it ends up being fun and creating memes out of some of it's more ridiculous moments.
If it tries to be too serious, it will be dead in the water.

Man that's just not fair. If a shitty romance novel with no plot can become a billion dollar film trilogy, why can't a potboiler about a giant shark enjoy financial success?

I don't think I ever said it can't be a success. But I don't think it can be a classic and well respected film like Jaws. And yes, I'm aware that a lot of people probably said the same of Jaws in its day.
50 Shades of Gray was certainly successful, but I don't think anyone has confused it with high art. At best it's a bunch of dumb fun... at best..

The main problem with The Meg (2018) IS that there have ALREADY been shark films featuring the Carcharocles Megalodon. Had this come out BEFORE all of those others then this MIGHT (or still MIGHT NOT) have been more successful. The previous Megalodon films (ESPECIALLY the SyFy Channel CRAP ones) will GREATLY diminish this film's success.

No one remembers it but it made almost $500M.

I want this movie to be great, I want that fear of the water to return for a new generation.

I'm looking forward to it as I generally enjoy shark films including crappy scyfy ones, but I'm not expecting this to be scary or even a sense of dread.
I think it will be more action/adventure.

For some reason I think I remember seeing that poster before any official materials were released. But it's definitely the best looking promotional material I've seen so far. The studio should hire that dude.
