Today marks the 17th anniversary of Richard Laymon's death; he died of a massive heart attack in his home at age 54. Laymon was a horror writer who specialized in sociopaths or psychotics doing really horrible things. Some of his books were downright nasty and graphic. On occasion he wrote books that dealt with the supernatural or some creature, rather than a psycho killer. Not all of his books were that great, in fact some were just mediocre, but when he was good oh man he was really good! He certainly had his own unique style of writing. I should also point out he was a great short story writer, and some of those stories were quite bizarre.
My top 5 Richard Laymon novels:
The Woods Are Dark (Warner edition) One Rainy Night Funland Flesh Midnight's Lair

I had very mixed results with his work. I absolutely loved Blood Games and One Rainy Night. Beware! was a fun read. I would have enjoyed Savage more if it had been a tighter, more concise plot. The others I read I didn't particularly enjoy.

I enjoyed his writing. Not sure why they don't make theatrical features from his books.

Read them when I was younger, he always seemed to be very pervy.

I’ll probably go back there & pick up a few. Probably get Island, Blood Games & Midnight’s Lair. What would you recommend of his supernatural/monster material outside of ‘travelling vampire show’?

I went back to the op shop today, & they had one of those titles; One Rainy Night. Also grabbed Island, Blood Games, Bite, Midnight’s Lair & The Traveling Vampire Show (the only one from the lot that I’ve read before). The majority were hardcovers, and only $2 a pop. $1 for paperbacks. the other titles they had; Out are the Lights the lake *Savage endless night *in the dark after midnight the midnight tour among the missing come out tonight Night in the lonesome October Alarums *Dark Mountain Dreadful Tales Quake *Funland (would have grabbed it, but the paperback was pretty rough) All Hallows Eve *Night Show Resurrection Dreams *read before. obviously somebody got rid of their collection.

You might want to pick up Dreadful Tales, too. That's a short story collection and it has some supernatural material as well.

Left two behind that had my eye (Resurrection Dreams & All Hallow’s Eve). However I might pick ‘em up further down the line… if still available.

Hey lostinlimbo. I was just curious if you liked any of the Laymon books I recommended. I read just the one thus far; ‘One Rainy Night’. Definitely appreciate the recommendation, as I would probably say it’s my favourite. Over-the-top, but a fun and gripping read. Laymon sure knew how to get the heart racing, and this was non-stop once the chaos began. Probably his best paced story from what I’ve read. I see you have ‘Midnight’s Lair’ in your 5 favourites, so I might try that one next, or something shorter (eg Island). Later this year I’ll look into possibly ordering a copy of Flesh, The Stake & The Cellar. Since I stop using public transport to/and from work. Which gave me 2hrs to read. Its thrown a spanner in the mix in juggling my time to read.

I've started re-reading The Cellar from the original Warner paperback edition that I recently ordered from Amazon.
