This thread was inspired because a remake of Death Wish is coming out this week.
I realize that this question is subject to opinion, but I don't think I've ever seen a remake that was better than the original. What do critics say. I don't expect the Bruce Willis version to come anywhere the Charles Bronson version. Gus Van Sant's remake of Psycho was a poor, although I liked that he used almost the same dialog verbatim.
I never understood why The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 was remade twice. I didn't think it was a classic in 1974. Has any other film been remade more than once?
I had a crush on Haley Mills, so the Lindsay Lohan version of The Parent Trap was terrible. A Perfect Murder was the pits compared to the Hitchcock film.
So you have my critical opinion of remakes. Do critics ever rave about a remake? Do remakes ever make as much money as they expected?

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) is in my opinion better than the original from 1934
So it happens but it's a rare thing.

The 2 "Cape Fears", in my opinion, were equally good. The only thing the original "Little Shop of Horrors" lacked was color.
Now, to be technical, there were 2 "Hulk" movies made only. and again, in my opimion, the second one was far superior to the first.

Ben-Hur is usually mentioned. I agree with Feologild Oakes Oakes about The Man Who Knew to Much

I liked the TRUE GRIT remake better than the original. I think it's a matter of taste.

The Maltese Falcon (the one with Bogart) is a remake.
Malick's The Thin Red Line is a remake.

The Wizard of Oz (1939) IS a REHASH that's said to be FAR SUPERIOR to the original.

I have been meaning to watch the earlier Maltese Falcon film, Satan Met a Lady.
The plot summary is so different (I mean its a trumpet not a falcon). The Maltese Trumpet.

It kinda depends. A lot of remakes are awful and the remakes of 'April Fool's Day', 'Prom Night', 'Psycho', 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' and 'Children of the Corn' are good examples of this but there have been some remakes that have been very popular and some that have been better and more successful than the original movies like 'The Ring', 'Carrie', 'The Fly', 'The Shining' 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and 'The Amityville Horror.' The original movie of 'The Shining' was that bad Stephen King called it a piece of shit and the remake (miniseries) was made by King himself to correct the mistakes in the movie.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers Airplane! Not really a remake or known as one but it did copy Zero Hour.

-The Departed (2006) - 7/10 (was a 10/10 for me at one point. but currently within my Top 186 movies) vs -Infernal Affairs (2002) - 5/10 (was watchable but ultimately forgettable) basically the cast is what really amps up the 2006 movie over the 2002 movie as they simply have a much stronger screen presence overall. there is likely more but just from what I spotted in this thread (along with what I talk about below to sostie) that's what came to mind. sostie I completely agree with that! -The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) - 9/10 (within my Top 26 movies) -The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) - 5/10 (forgettable) -True Grit (2010) - 8/10 (within my Top 56 movies) -True Grit (1969) - 4/10 (below average) I am amazed how anyone can prefer the original over the remakes in these two movies case as it's not even vaguely close. just looking at the True Grit thing... the general visual style etc just has a lot more flair to it and the overall cast is superior to as personally I think those who like the 1969 movie over the 2010 version must be huge John Wayne fans or something because I think the 2010 movie is basically superior across the board with maybe John Wayne being about the only exception that I could understand people liking. hell, the same basically applies to The Thomas Crown Affair to... the 1999 has a pretty unique feel/tone to it and the leads have solid chemistry together which is all missing from the 1968 version. p.s. technically, I have not seen The Fly (1958) but it's pretty safe to say The Fly (1986)(7/10) will be better for me and the same goes with Scarface (1932) vs Scarface (1983)(7/10). chances are had I seen the originals they would probably be a 5/10 (at the most).

there have been some remakes that have been better than the original movies like 'The Ring', 'Carrie', 'The Shining' 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. No. I agree with you about ‘Carrie.’ I meant to put that in the line about bad remakes when I was going back to add other remakes and put it in the wrong section but ‘The Ring’ was far more successful than the original Japanese movie and got a lot of great reviews. It was one of the most popular Horror movies of the early 00s and launched Naomi Watts to the top. ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ was widely liked and breathed new life into a franchise that had been dead for a long time. It is featured on a lot of lists of best Horror remakes of all time and was one of the most successful Horror movies of the 00s which lead to more sequels and ‘The Shining’ is a matter of personal tastes but when the author who is one of the most successful authors of all time (and considered the greatest writer of the past century by many journalists) calls your movie adaption shit and an insult to his novel you have done something very wrong. I get that some people like it but as a Stephen King fan who loved the novel I can see why Stephen had a problem with it. Hopefully the ‘Doctor Sleep’ movie will be better than both the previous ‘Shining’ adaptions.

Dawn of the Dead (2004) was very good, on equal footing with the original.
These were all better: The Fly (1986) The Thing (1982) The Last House On The Left (2009) Scarface (1983) The Hills Have Eyes (2006) Hairspray (2007) Man On Fire (2004) The Blob (1988)
