Not out of kindness though, its out of necessity, they're trying to catch up (or at least stay in the race at this point) but they are going about it all wrong.
Same thing happened last gen, that's why Sony offered free online play (but not on PS4), not because they loved their customers but because they needed to close the large gap that that 360 had by not only releasing earlier than the PS3 but undercutting it in price with a bigger better catalogue of exclusives that Sony had at the start, sound familiar?
Sony did the right thing last gen to close the gap and that was pump out plenty of great big exclusives that people wanted to play, all those extra features the Xbox One X are coming out with are nice bonuses but people want games to play on their games consoles, it literally is as simple as that.
Also I say this as someone who owns an Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 and an Xbox One and Playstation 4, so I want both XB1 and PS4 to succeed.

They both will succeed. I find it amusing when people get caught up in the console wars hype. It's like believing that Coke will someday beat Pepsi once and for all.

I agree, the console wars of every generation have been pretty stupid but seems to be something almost unique to gaming Maybe its because most first console ownership tends to be at a very young age it creates a bond with a brand But I also wouldn't say that it's impossible for Xbox to cease as a console either, I'm sure Microsoft have expectations about the Xbox brand and depending how far behind and for how long there is always a possibility they might stop, just because Microsoft as a company have bottomless pits of money doesn't mean they want to throw money at it permanently.

And I don't want anyone to fail unless they're products are terrible like the new Star Wars game or the new Metal Gear game.
