Did anyone really need to see sexually confused dwarfs taking it from behind by elves? In a "beautiful" way?
And I cannot think of two more contradicting forces than Del Toro's "progressive" worldview and the elegance, majesty, and honor of Tolkien's creations.
Just thank God this never came to pass.

Oh come on, elf-dwarf sex writes itself.

Yeah, I can't help but think he'd do some weird stuff that deviated from the source material.
Smaug giving birth to Gollum's baby comes to mind...unfortunately.

Agreed. Del Toro's got his own style. It just doesn't fit with Tolkien's world.
That said, The Shape of Water was a masterclass in film making.

Yikes...That's gonna be stuck with me for a while now. BTW, I still need to see The Shape of Water.

I think that maybe it would have worked out well if he joined the franchise. Remember, a director is (almost) never defined by one movie. I think del Toro knows very well that he couldn't put themes from The Shape of Water in a Hobbit movie. Look at f.e. Pan's Labyrinth, my favorite movie in his filmography and has a very different tone from TSOW (aka non-sexual fantasy creatures). I'm not saying it would've worked, but I'd be interested to see what he would've done with the material. Still, I think if he wants to do a franchise fantasy movie, he'd be the absolute perfect candidate for a Bioshock movie.
