Doctor Strange had a similar problem to Ant Man. Marvel clearly had a lack of faith in both properties so they packed them full of self depreciating humor and lots of winking at the audience. Now that they're proven successes I hope they can up their game and deliver better movies for the sequels. I thought Strange was intelligently done, whatwith Strange being one of the only recent heroes to adhere to the "No killing" thing and how he defeated Dormammu with intelligence rather than raw power.

Man I wish Marvel made more animated films based on their comics and graphic novels. Even if most of them sucked, it was still cool to see DC make animated movies.

The problem is that the guy in charge of Marvel's Animation (Jeph Loeb) doesn't like cartoons much to start with and only wants to bare minimum amount put into them. He's in charge of all their TV stuff and really only cares about the TV shows and Netflix shows.
DC Animation has been backed for decades by an animation titan like WB, and since classic cartoons were their bread and butter their Animation Heads are separate from their TV heads and they care about their stuff.
If someone at the Animation Department was willing to ask Disney to restructure things so Loeb had nothing to do with the animation and only dealt with live TV stuff and put someone else in charge who LIKED cartoons, things would be different.

That needs to happen or at least should, in my honest opinion. There's a big missed opportunity by Disney, especially financially.

I don't disagree with that. I'm not saying it's a bad movie. I enjoy it and appreciate what it has going for it. But it's just a little awkward at times. Part of that is due to the inherent awkwardness of a neurosurgeon becoming a wizard and the disconnect between the character's starting point and ending point. But it's also packed full of some very cutesy humor that feels forced in and very self depreciating.
