Studio Ghibli has given the world a bunch of realistic dramas. What separates KOKURIKO-ZAKA KARA (FROM UP ON POPPY HILL) from the others is that it doesn't have an engaging plot, interesting characters nor a very meaningful conflict. 3/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian).

Ooh, how I disagree.
I found From Up on Poppy Hill exceptionally engaging. The peak into 1960's Japanese culture was fascinating, and the two main leads great.
I think it makes a great companion piece to Whisper of the Heart. Young love down in a sweet, realistic way.

While it's not as great as Whisper of the Heart, I still enjoy it when Ghibli does films like this. There's just something about them that really pulls you in and makes you feel good. It's one of the best animated films of 2011 and certainly better than a lot of the other post Howl Ghibli films.
A very strong 7/10
