Lol that was done pretty well. These days that's probably how the movie would do.
I'm not sure what it is exactly but humour just seemed a bit more natural back then whereas now it can feel like it's put in just for the sake of it so can feel a bit out of place.
I thought the comedy at the start of the Last Jedi was a bit off. The Force Awakens however got it's comedy down pretty well so maybe it depends on the direction.

Comedy is so dumbed down and blatant in a lot of modern blockbusters. It's not organic at all, but rather placed there to make things readily consumable for the mass market in the most generic way imaginable. And man, that crank call by Poe in Last Jedi was so cringeworthy!
