I didn't know there was a director's cut. I may or may not have seen it before but TCM is showing late night on April 23 if you're interested.

According the to wikipedia: I suspect the Director's Cut is what we have been watching for years. The "European" cut was shown in the U.S. in a limited release. I saw it in 1970. You can tell this "Director's Cut" by the presence of a scene showing Gen. Mapache in a battle with the rebels. A young boy stands beside him and refuses to retreat with the others. Mapache and the boy stand proudly together ignoring the shots around them.
