I'm not a huge fan of Jane Fonda. I find her career to be a little uneven.
But? "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" has to be one of the darkest portrayals of utter despair and desperation ever filmed.
I think it's one of her best performances, certainly in her top 3-4.

I used to hate Jane Fonda's work ... but somehow I forced myself to watch 15 of her films ... and now she's not as bad as I had originally thought. (I'm still not a fan of hers though ... lol)
Jane Fonda was excellent in TSHDT
Jane Fonda - (top 5 I've seen)
On Golden Pond (1981) They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) Walk on the Wild Side (1962) The China Syndrome (1979) Barefoot in the Park (1967)

I'd also throw on "Klute", which, while overrated, was still a pretty good performance.

She did well in it. I actually forgot I was watching Jane Fonda. An interesting film but quite a depressing film for nothing at the end. True (although I do believe it was sort of the point). They were juxtaposing some of the 'whacky elements' of 1930's pop culture against the more grim realities of that time. Very, very dark film. EDIT: Where did Morlocks post go?

A very good movie, dark, as has been mentioned, it seems overshadowed by another, equally dark movie from the same year, Midnight Cowboy. Not that they're alike but both films focus on marginal people at the bottom rung of society. Both are about as far from Old Hollywood as possible. No moral uplift whatsoever.

I'm not usually a visitor of the Film General board; just checking it out. But I love this thread, and wanted to ask if you would consider making a similar post on the Classic Film Board. Many of us there would love to have such a discussion, I'm sure. Just a thought. Anyway, I agree with you about the film and Fonda's performance. One of her very best. Thank you! I am enjoying my time on these boards, undoubtedly because of people like you, or us! I will do that! Cheers!

Yes, so little it's ridiculous - they're about as hard to take seriously as An Affair to Remember, only in the opposite direction.
