I guess this topic has probably been brought up a few times before, either through Film General or the old Anime/Aimated board, but still, it is always interesting to discuss and get to see which animated baddies, have made a lasting impression: Sharptooth from The Land Before Time (1988)I thought I would start up with one of the earliest and most menacing and frightening animated villains that I could think of, and who came through seeing Don Bluth and his absolute classic late 80s movie, The Land Before Time. In that film, we got early on, introduced to the ruthless Sharptooth, which still stands firmly among some of the alltime great and memorable villains of the 80s and 90s. Watching the film during the early 90s (our local cinema used to do a re-run of lots of animated films back from the 80s, around that time) and when Sharptooth made his introduction, I remember little kids began tro cry, some so much that their parents had to leave the theatre, and I remember how I would grip hard around the arm of my mum and dad, during some of the scarier scenes. I have wasted enough time, on watching a few too many, of the later video movie sequels, and they are just so far away of the original, not only in quality and story telling, but lacking the kind of fearful and down right scary villain as Sharptooth, but I guess that also happened to a lot of the Disney made for tv sequels as well. Too cozy and cute, but without the same "punch" of the first film. Anyway, one of my favorite scenes, not only from this film, but also from any animated one, came when Cera, all by herself, gets a little too cocky and smug, but that is about to change, when old Sharptooth suddenly gives her the evil eye: To watch this scene at big screen, in the move theater dark, that was quite a ride. Damn, that eye opening part, was pure evil, and I wonder how many kids got some classic childhood "trauma" out of that one.

Fagin in War of the Birds (1990)Another memorable villain from an early childhood animated classic, came through the danish War of the Birds, or Fuglekrigen i Kanøfleskoven, where a group of peace loving small birds, live in a quiet forest, but when the evil vulture Fagin arrives, all that is about to change, as he sure takes no prisoners and where there can only be one winner in the War of the Birds. Along with Valhalla (1986) and Jungledyret Hugo (1993), the Danish cinema brought forward some stunning and highly enjoyable animated films during the 80s and early 90s, and where my favorite might be Jungledyret Hugo, but where I think War of the Birds surely contained the best villain of the bunch, with Fagin. Re-watched the film a few years ago, and I think the animation has held up, very well. Sadly, it is only in Danish language, and since there were no subtitles included, that was kind of a "bummer", as danish is very easy to read, but not always so easy to understand, when hearing it.

William Sykes from Oliver & Company (1988)Maybe not the most beloved villain nor 80s Disney animated classic, yet it is one that stands out, in that it takes place during modern time New York City, and not several decades or further back in time. And I kind of like that concept, even if the soundtrack/songs and animation might not always be up to the very best Disney standard, but I still have fond memories of seeing it as a kid, back when it was getting a rerun in the cinemas during the early 90s. The main villain, I guess kind of were based upon the whole yuppie lifestyle of New York at that time, and Sykes is surely one nasty and mean baddie, him and his two guard dogs. He also ended up getting one very unforgettable and hard hitting ending, which even to day seem almost a bit too "much": The funny thing about Sykes, is that he kind of looks like my former family Doctor, who is one of the nicest guys I have ever met. Also, the voice of Sykes is done by Robert Loggia.

I would have to pick Light Yagami from Death Note. Long story short, he's a teenager who gets a notebook where he can write anybody's name in it and they die. However, rather than him being a villain in the background, you follow him as a main character throughout the entire story and see how he thinks. I don't want to give too much away but in his mind he's the savior of humanity, wiping out evil-doers, and he is incredibly intelligent, cunning, and absolutely ruthless in his goal and will do the most despicable, sociopathic things to achieve it. I came to legitimately hate him. --- If we're talking more Western animation, I always liked Ursula from The Little Mermaid. I don't think she featured all that much in it but Poor Unfortunate Souls is just a perfect villain song: Just a grimy, sleazy villain but an entertaining one.

Perhaps most of Disney's classic villains, though I would also give a shoutout to Ramses from Prince of Egypt.

My web browser seems to only work with images copied directly from other sites so I'll link to a video. It's a well known fairytale from Alexander Pushkin. The villain of sorts is a greedy old wife. It's a half hour film. A fisherman saves a fish that's really an undersea ruler and his wife, from a meager first request makes progressively greedier demands.

Judge Doom (technically he IS a toon).
"Of course not. You lack vision, but I see a place where people get on and off the freeway. On and off, off and on all day, all night. Soon, where Toon Town once stood will be a string of gas stations, inexpensive motels, restaurants that serve rapidly prepared food. Tire salons, automobile dealerships and wonderful, wonderful billboards reaching as far as the eye can see. My God, it'll be beautiful."

Oh yeah, he used to scare the crap out of me, when I was a kid, even in his human form, or shape, one could sense that something about him was just not "alright", and the whole revelation with those insane, glowing red eyes, it reminded me later on, how I felt when I first saw the Terminator endoskeleton rise out of the flames, when you thought it was all over, and suddenly something even more evil and nightmarish looking, came out of nowhere, and yeah, I miss bad guys like that.
