In a post-apocalyptic future, four wolves embark on a journey to find Paradise. Along the way, they are both opposed and helped by humans with differing agendas.
From the studio Bones, the series ran for 24 episodes with 4 OVAs to complete the stories. The OVAs would not have been necessary, but the studio fell behind their production schedule and threw in four rather badly done clip episodes to buy time to catch up.
The wolves pass for humans by an unexplained ability to make people not see them as wolves unless they wish it. This leads to some rather odd moments in the animation, such as Tsume driving a jeep in the first episode, or Toboe having a twisted ankle and sitting with his pants leg rolled up and his shoe on the ground. In addition, most of the time, even when the four wolves are alone, they are shown in their human guise.
The characters are all rather one dimensional:
- Kiba, a wolf obsessed with finding the Lunar Flower Maiden and opening the way to Paradise
- Tsume, a cynical wolf with a heart of gold
- Hige, a lighthearted wolf who serves primarily as comic relief
- Toboe, a young wolf who continually must prove himself to the others
- Cheza, the Lunar Flower Maiden who has no personality to speak of, but then she's a flower, so ...
- Cher DegrΓ©, a beautiful scientist obsessed with studying Cheza
- Hubb Lebowski, a police detective desperately in love with Cher (his ex wife)
- Quent Yaiden, an ex-sheriff bent on killing all wolves due to a misguided desire for vengence
- Darcia, the main antagonist in the series, a fallen noble who seeks Cheza in order to restore his wife's soul
- Jaguara, an insane noble who wages war against the other nobles in her efforts for capture Cheza in order to open Paradise
- Blue, Quent's devoted dog who discovers she is part wolf after encountering Cheza
Curiously, this lack of depth works well, keeping the episodes focused on action and story line over character development. This isn't to say the characters do not change during the series, but that's more a part of plot than exploration of character.
The opening theme is rather bland, but the closing theme is well done. The music throughout the series is apropos for the most part.
The voice acting for the dub is strong, and the cast features many names you are probably familiar with from other anime.
All in all, not a great series, but definitely watchable.
