I haven't seen either version. However I have been present for screenings of both versions.
I attend a Science Fiction Marathon every year. It starts at 8:00 PM on a Friday, runs all night and lets out in the wee small hours of the following Sunday.
One year they showed Solaris (1972) at 5:30am. I went to sleep. I slept through almost all of the film, and woke up near the end. When the credits rolled, the auditorium erupted into a cheer. But it was a cheer of, "Thank goodness that's over!" The next year's Marathon T-shirt had a small blurb printed on it that read, "I survived Solaris."
Then, ten years later, they showed Solaris (2002) at 5:35am. And once again, I went to sleep. I slept through the entire film. I think everyone slept through it.

I like both of them. Solaryis was certainly unique in 1972, but I tend to like the remake a little better. 30 years later it's more polished and it has a mysterious soundtrack which greatly enhances the mood. I was especially impressed by Viola Davis' intense performance in a different kind of role for her. Also there's a better chemistry between Clooney and McElhone than in the original

Big fan of the original, but then Tarkovsky is in my Top 5 Directors. Probably my second favorite of his after Stalker.
Can't recall the remake, think I found it a little dull, but that's probably only by comparison.

Clooney's Solaris - moderately enjoyable 6/10, as I recall
Tarkovsky's Solyaris - pretentious & boring

I liked both films, maybe the latter American one was a little more comprehensible. I like the idea. There's the theory that the Earth is a living being, which makes sense to me. Gaia et al. So if that were true there would be variations of this, which the space travelers encountered. And the planet attempted to communicate with them using the travelers' thoughts.
It seemed to me that Carl Sagan used a variation of this theme in 'Contact', in which the ETs attempted to communicate with the woman using images from her mind.
Optimistic outcome for interplanetary and interstellar travel, considering the travelers will probably not return to Earth.

The original is landmark science fiction cinema. I despise the remake starring George Clooney. 'Annihilation' struck me as very influenced by the original. Actually, I believe there was an even earlier version made for Soviet television, which I've never seen.
