Nabokov was a nearly incomparable talent, which makes it all the more annoying that he apparently suffered from some genuine phobia that any writer, living or dead, might for a moment be considered superior to himself. He was already playing in the majors; the sort of rancor he spouts in some of his opinions sounds more like uninformed childish spite than anything remotely resembling thought-out criticism.

I have to agree with him about Faulkner. I had to read Light in August for a course and I loathed it.
Joseph Conrad, on the other hand, is a good writer.
